In banking if a business owns commercial and investment banking divisions. They are required to physically or logically separate the two. This prevents conflict of interest and market manipulation. Should this be applied to tech? Company which have Ad revenue and also write system software like browsers, mail clients, OSes, etc should be required to logically separate the two teams and operate them as separate companies. Otherwise it leads to conflict of interest where the Ad side of business plunders the privacy of user data by forcing the system side to build spyware. (Like Google chrome and windows) Should the Congress pass a bill to force Ad companies like Google and Microsoft? The whole world is turning a blind eye as these companies use their system software like Trojan horses to steal user data.
Where did u see ads in your os?
Still Windows 10 sends user data for BING ads.
Break up big tech
Not that easy. Recommended read: https://www.economist.com/leaders/2018/01/18/how-to-tame-the-tech-titans
We need a Steven Seagall for tech
Btw glass steagall was repealed in 99, so there is no restriction now
I know .... the separation is logical after 99 not physical
You watch TV for free because there are ads, you get software for free because there are ads. The analogy with banking does not work because in banking you put the money in the account and they can still use it for mortgages in the commercial side and hence make money, that's how banks operated profitably for decades.
Services like YouTube or Search can be ad driven and free no problem. But desktop software and OS are totally different thing.
@timscuck It costs an average of $150 a year to operate a basic checking account. Yeah, the one you expect to be free. Every time grandma sends you a $20 check for your birthday it costs average $4 per check to get the money in the account. Yet the bank doesn’t charge you to make this deposit. So yes, the money you place in the bank along with the transaction you conduct (swipe fees) help defray the costs associated with the account. Banks aren’t a Not for profit and neither is tech. TV is not free.
