Recently interviewed with Uber for L4 SWE and was told that the overall feedback was positive but was down-leveled to L3 with the reason being “the team felt that you weren't quite ready for an L4/SDE II role”. I know that a few other companies (like Google) give candidates the option to do additional interviews for a chance at an up-level. Is this possible at Uber as well?

Also, does anyone have an idea of the compensation ranges for L3 for Bay Area/New York/Seattle? What would be the maximum that Uber could offer? Thanks.

YOE: 1-2
TC: 200+

L3 is probably the expected level at that yoe, tbf. You maybe want to negotiate your salary (which is the end goal anyway), as these bands have some overlap.

The expectations for L4 will be much higher, so it may be a better idea to be a rockstar L3 who gets promoted quickly than an L4 who is doing below the bar.

Yeah it would be a lateral move, but it’s not a beneficial move for me right now unless Uber stock explodes (which is possible, but not very likely in the upcoming financial environment), or if the Uber L3 max offer is close to 300k for the first year (including signing bonus), which seems even unlikelier.

Makes sense, and I would decide the same in your shoes. I don’t think L3 will surpass 300k, and the stock is doing poorly due to covid. You can always check again later once the stock is healthier - with an added bonus that your then higher yoe will make a L4/5a much more likely.

It would be close to what you are making now. Are you a L3 at Google? Yoe? Have you mentioned to the recruiter your current level?

Check levels.fyi. You should have not disclosed your current level… But you can’t revert it back now.

Could you explain why I shouldn’t mention my current level? I told the recruiter at the start of the process that I was looking for L4 opportunities only.

Google offers you a chance to up level if:
    A) you were only considered for level n (not n/n+1)
    B) you crushed it an n

That is not the case you're in. You interviewed for n+1, and specifically for down levelled to n. Why on earth would they let you interview for n+1 again?

Thanks for clarifying. I wasn’t sure of the intricacies behind up-level interviews. I guess I’ll look to interview at other companies.

  • Tell them you’re not interested, don’t take a downlevel. They’ll either take the hint and let you interview for L4 or do you a favor and tell send you on your way

I already interviewed for L4. Do you mean that they would give me additional interviews? I’m certainly not taking the L3 offer unless the numbers are really high, which is why I wanted to know what the max numbers could look like.
