Who is using node in production?

Jan 11 10 Comments

Just wondering if there are any decent paying companies using node in production.

Lately, I’ve been working with java and it’s been a less than ideal experience. The async stuff is just so cumbersome and clumsy in my opinion and it makes me miss working with full stack JavaScript/TypeScript. I know node gets a lot of hate here but with TS it’s pretty great for GraphQL, REST and gRPC. I feel like it has a better developer experience and allows engineers to work more efficiently.

Many small to mid size companies. HBOMax for example.

@It’s TV thanks for sharing. Are you still there? Does it at least use typescript? I’ll have to look into roles there.

Pre-max everything was 2014 Javascript. OOP and no modern features. The in-house frontend framework is also notoriously difficult to learn (most people take ~6 months). An effort started ~2019 to modernize some services piece by piece, but basically everything was running smoothly before that — so it wasn’t priority #1 or even close.

Comp is surprisingly very competitive for new hires, might change after discovery takes over, but it can be on the high end for Seattle. AT&T introduced some WLB & retention issues, but it’s an easy interview if you’re looking.
