I’ve been working at T-mobile as a contract designer. I like the work but I ultimately want a full time role. I’ve been offered a contract to hire position at Godaddy and the chance of getting converted in 3-6 months is 98%. The work at Godaddy will be less interesting but has a great chance of getting converted. I’ll also need to take minor salary cut, at least until I get converted to full time. I’m wondering if I should take it or not. Thoughts?#design #interviews #ui/ux
Check with your manager at T-Mobile if you can get converted to FTE. I heard that to get converted to FTE, you'll need to go through the same hiring process as an outside hire. But it doesn't hurt asking to your manager!
Thanks. I think it’s still too early for me to ask as I’ve only joined the company not too long ago but I’ll try
Also, keep in mind that P&T is trying to reduce it's contractor workforce. It has planned to lay off 2 contractors and hire 1 FTE. It should be completed by 2022.
I work at GoDaddy. Company is going the right direction and stock / overall health during this time couldn’t be better. Do you happen to know what team specifically you would be joining? I could give you a clear yay or nay with that context.
+1
I believe it’s godaddy.com
Tmobile is going through lot of restructuring now. Might be hard to get it converted to full time in the near future.
Thanks. Good point
I was about to say this. There are a lot of things up in the air right now. Some orgs are restructuring with potential for layoffs while my team is hiring like crazy. With that said, taking a pay cut and less interesting work doesn’t sound appealing. Why don’t you ask your boss about the prospect of getting converted to FTE? Use that info to influence your decision.
I work at GoDaddy and it's notorious for paying below market, up to you if you want that security, benefits are great though.
Use godaddy as leverage against T-Mobile and see what happens. Ultimately I would write your top 3-5 items that are important for you at work (life balance, pay, people, interesting work, FTE, advancement opportunities, etc.) and rate both jobs against them. That’ll give you a good idea
I think my top choices are FTE& interesting work. People and culture are important but it’s hard for me to judge at this point
I used to run UX here; don’t bother coming over.
Can you elaborate? Thanks
Sure. There are at least 4 VPs / C Suites who think they own design and therefore UX. Marketing will always do their own thing. Homepage team doesn’t give a fuck about what anyone else is doing. There’s a design system team but half company doesn’t even use it because their too incompetent to use React. Don’t waste your time on the UX here all the good designers leave within 2 years because they realize it’s hopeless.
Is there any design team that has a strong design voice or generally, design team doesn’t have much to say on the table
Hi, GD marketer here. I would say UX has much more say than marketing. (Literally in the site marketing call right now hearing 20 marketers complain we are not in the loop with brands decisions enough.) I also started as a contractor and was converted to a FTE. Then after a year switched orgs/teams very easily.
Thanks so much. How do you like the company/culture?
Love the people which is why I think I’m still with the company. I’ll say that when I was converted to an FTE it was pretty cool to receive 20k more on my salary, full benefits, and RSUs overnight for doing the same job. I work really closely with the FoS designers / architects and they are all great to work with.
GoDaddy hands down. The culture is created from ex-Microsoft/Yahoo folks. Resembles an actual top tech company as far as approach and structure. Much better on the resume alone. TMobile is not even close. (Used to work at GoDaddy)

People who like Modi, are you okay with your country’s leader using words like “infiltrators” for a community?
I’d not. Less interesting work and less pay means no to me. No one can promise you a FT position. Apply for a FT at other places.
Thanks
