Do you consider those that go to state schools (excluding UCB, UIUC and Gtech) to be failures? I was in the Bay Area with some friends of friends at a few unicorns and they could not understand how somehow as smart as me wasted my time at a state school. It's not the first time I have felt this. I get the impression that in SV, people look down on those that went to unremarkable state schools even if the resume since then shows otherwise. P. S. I am talking strictly about undergraduate.

Lol youâre an idiot, not very smart otherwise wouldnât be asking this question
Those people are idiots. Everyone with an ounce of reasoning ability knows that where you go to school only probably determines the caliber of the average student, but to say or imply that every student from a state school is wasting their time if theyâre smart is both short-sighted and myopic. The standard deviation for a students âintelligenceâ/talent at a state school is far higher than at private schools, so even though the average student is probably more talented at a top private school, thatâs hardly relevant if youâre a top student at either, because those students are about the same caliber. Also, most state schools arenât as lenient in grading as other top schools (like ivy leagues) and limit As to 10%, so itâs a much more spartan and uncatering culture. Even aside from this logical deduction, strong students attend state schools for a myriad of reasons unrelated to their academic ability, such as family reasons, money, etc. Also, in my experience, the top students I know at top engineering schools (MIT, Stanford, etc.) not only believe in this objective fact that I just mentioned, but also donât paint of picture of such explicit superiority when they discuss schools. They know that there is a degree of luck to getting into the top private schools, as theyâre not meritocracies. The most talented students from top schools are frequently the most modest, because in addition to high IQ, they also boast high EQ. The most impressive and inspiring engineers I have ever met are total brainiacs, but really distinguish themselves through their EQ and ability to understand others, not just math/engineering. It seems none of those unicorn workers you talked to have such a prowess, so itâs actually ironic of them to try and perpetuate such a pernicious stereotype of state school students, because theyâre actually making themselves look pretty dumb lol. Side note: Berkeley is frequently regarded as a top 3 CS undergrad destination in the same tier as MIT, Stanford, and CMU so no one would ever look down on that even if they were shortsighted enough to believe smart students waste their time at state schools.
I went to a school almost nobody here ever heard about.
Lol
No. That's ridiculous.
Youâre hanging out with little pricks that needed to get beaten up more as kids.
Went to a state school, joined Google as a new grad (undergrad).
I went to a state school, and not even a great one. Several of my classmates now work at Google. Average student debt upon graduating for this group is like $25k and we still made it to Google, so I don't consider it much of a failure đ¤ˇââď¸
doesnât matter. if a person works at say faang thatâs a far more important data pt than going to ivy league
