I am Sde 2 in Amazon . Have been Sde2 from past 4.5 years( Top ratings throughout , victim of reorgs). Currently leading my team and charter. I have no issues with team ,.however it felt my org is pretty unstable (frequent leadership changes) . Also my hike has been 0.4% base, no stocks. Casually tried my luck outside and converted couple of companies (FAANG) with decent bay bump. Told my manager on Friday about leaving the company. He looked stumped. Anyways he setup another 1-1 meeting for today and mentioned his plans of putting me up for promotion next quarter. He also mentioned that he has been aligning director from past 3-4 months and is pretty confident of promoting me in Q3. Infact I got a meeting invite from my Director's EA for tomorrow, subject is to discuss my growth options. Strangely before when ever i asked my manager about promotions , he always mentioned he is looking for more data points on something or the other. I asked him today about this and he said he was anyways planning to talk to me by this month end on promotion. I asked about comp as well, he said he tried his best in annual review but I am already way beyond my target. Anyways, I am pretty much comfortable in current setting. Should I wait out for promo , or should I still go ahead with switch . If I do go ahead will it burn any bridges since they are now putting in efforts for my promotion ? Anyone has prior experience with similar development ?
Can managers really make such promises one quarter early? I've generally heard no
So in Amazon for most of the orgs, promotions are now quarterly. So I guess there is some time in promotion for Q3.
Promotion is not in your manager's hand. He can only put the packet forward and discuss. So any claim of promoting you for sure is bs.
Your manager sounds like a fuckboi. Take the external offer.
You are right, check my update
I wouldn't stay unless you know you're irreplaceable. Usually when you give notice of leaving, it's strongly advised not to accept counter or in your case, promise of promotion. Right now they need you so they want to keep you. As soon as they can replace you, they will let you go or show you the way little by little and you won't have the leverage you have now.
Thanks for the insight. Since I have been with the space/domain longest and know all tribal data etc, they can't immediately replace me. But I am positive anyone with some ramp up time can get up to speed. Not sure about whether my manage is genuine or is it just ploy to keep me longer.
Maybe I'm jaded and too pessimistic but I wouldn't risk it in this case and leave. I had best of my growth in moving to new companies because I have seen that people are expendable to companies and there's no loyalty when it comes to companies having your back. It's all about having leverage.
Looks like the manager made up the promo thing in reaction to your external offer news. As others said, you are better off leaving. Maybe offer them few more weeks of service and offer to bring someone else in the team up to speed. This will mean you don't want to burn Bridges from your side. In case you get screwed for whatever reason, you will not be carrying any blame as you went the extra step.
Yup agreed, sounds reasonable. I like idea of few more weeks.
Don't be a fool, And leave. Manager didn't care until u resigned.
Just leave. These things never work out. Fucked #1 your managers transfers group or leaves before your promotion. Fucked #2 your manager says it was really close, but there some people that were a bit better. Next quarter should be a slam dunk. Fucked #3 they have to lay some people off and ask you to leave since you already told them when you were thinking about. Fucked #4 you are now considered disloyal and your manager and skip level will treat you accordingly going forward.
Do you have some critical deliverables which will get impacted if you leave? If yes, they are buying time by playing this strategy. Can you tell your director to give you in writing for your promo? I bet he won't.
100 percent this . At the end of the day you are comparing promesses of future gain vs actual offer from the new employer.
Stay a little longer so you can transition your responsibilities (like 4-6 weeks) and negotiate a retention-like bonus.
Get out of there. They didnt value you till you were on your way out. That yells you everything you need to know.
Agreed

Are they promising a decent raise when promotion happens? If not, then no point in staying.
So if promotion happens ,I will get hike in my total compensation . However since I am already beyond my current target compensation I am not getting any immediate raise.
