What is the true difference between these large investment banks? For MBB we all have this impression whether true or not that McKinsey is the true top dog. What's the situation for these investment banks? If team + locations were all equal what's the difference in terms of pay, benefits, opportunities, culture? Can anyone from these banks or people who have worked for at least two of these places give some insight? Please be specific about whether you are talking about their IT teams or their finance teams. Thanks.
Goldman has been the top for 20+ years and will likely always carry the most prestige. JPM has carved out a major place for itself with the underlying stability of its commercial bank. MS was once a top 2/3 bank, but seems to be slipping a bit, with the exception of tech, as its leadership focuses more on WM (see Etrade acquisition). All great places to work if you find the right group
Lol
Hi I’m Patrick Bateman and I have to return some video tapes lol
For engineering, GS is playing catch-up, i got offer from them and declined to join MS. I would choose MS/JPM >GS. But won’t stay long in MS as well as i have new opportunities.
Pretty sure Goldman pays more than Morgan?
They matched each other offers
Curious why MerrillLynch isn’t included in your consideration set. #askingforafriend
Lol
So how’s the TC over at nomura?
As an outsider I heard that MS is always chasing Goldman and that JPM is kind of doing it’s own thing.
I’ve worked at both GS and JPM. JPM has nice perks like a pension, better WLB and way more offices to work out of. GS has better comp, prestige and better exit opps. JPM headcount is 8x GS, for whatever that’s worth.
Pension no longer a thing as of this year though. And GS is gradually trying to catch up on opening regional offices
When is it effective? What about people who return to JPM?
Pay: GS > JPM & MS Tech: No doubt JPM > GS. Not sure about MS though
Got out of JPM and moved to a smaller bank with higher pay
have worked in both GS and JPM.. GS culture would stick with you for life.. but GS is no longer the GS of 2004-2005 Eye watering revenue from FICC. GS is now focussing more on commercial and retail banking side.. low commission with more volumes.. where JPM is already strong in that domain. Also JPM is ahead on cloud and modern stack adoption.. life is also much chill here with lot of opportunities.. whereas GS would feell like boiler room always. GS would give more bonus.. but it all depends on the group you are joining and how closer you are to customer or money flow.

I only have a technologist’s perspective but Goldman has a higher hiring bar & comp as compared to other two, though your WLB is worse on average. That being said I would pick GS > MS > JPM.
I thought Goldman would buy us. It turns out MS was smarter
Our hiring bar is at limbo level right now
