Good time to join Snap Inc (Snapchat) as PM?

Hi I am seeing quite some PM positions open in Snap Inc with interesting job description. I am currently a product manager in Amazon (2.75 yrs in Amazon) but not too happy here (stocks are the only motivation). Internal switches have become almost impossible with the hiring freeze in Amazon, so joining another team is out of option.

Should I be bothered with the layoffs and the bad reputation Snap got? Do you think the company will get into more pathetic state going ahead? I don’t want to escape one hell hole to land into another and fear firing at all times but don’t want to miss a good opportunity either. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

    • If you have a coorporate Yahoo email that is still active and you have access to (which would really be bad on Yahoo's side), yes. But not the public @yahoo.com

      Snapchat is probably the worst place you could work at right now. It’s imploding and the worst people will be last ones to leave as they don’t get hired elsewhere and can best millions even at $5 per share so no reason to leave —I’ve seen the best ones leave (just see LinkedIn to verify)

    Very happy at Snap. There's lots of opportunities to own big chunks of the product or process because it's still pretty startup-ish. There's a real effort to turn the culture and performance feedback process around. It was listed as the number 1 goal for leadership this year. The long term strategy makes sense to me, the short term is a bit scarier though

    I believe in Snap in the long term. There are problems, but the media can be pretty sensationalist. Products are actually cool. You have nothing to lose if you apply. Get a better sense of what it’s like to work here from the team.

    Maybe I’m just too old and not the target market but I don’t get the hype around Snapchat. I’ve used it sparingly and the constant UI/UX changes annoy the fuck outta me. Let alone ads and stuff from sponsored partners or whatever. If I’m gonna send a pic to someone I’ll just text it.

    Sorry for being off topic but what hiring freeze? I just applied for a dev position in Amazon, is that why I haven't heard back? Google and others were interested so I assumed Amazon would be as well.

    I wouldn’t recommend joining.. there are so many other options out there. Unless you are passionate about the product to be willing to bear some pain, I would look elsewhere.

    Why Amazonians came to Snap and take over. As you know many managers from AMZN, so the culture fucked and toxic now!!!! + fired so many engineers (fuked up in btw teams - very very bad - bigger than Chinese Wall) and the money compensated to C levels.
