TC 329K YOE 30-37 Was put into TPM L5 interview loop and I don't know what went into that decision and by whom. I was rated highly in interviews (by 6-12 YOE people) and passed HC easily but then found that L5 is really below my past exp. level so want to be considered for L6. From what I hear that is a different loop? I have seen a couple people here just have a leveling phone interview. I asked my recruiter but he just says I would need to interview in a complete new onsite loop. Is that my only option? I am considering insisting on L6 consideration at this point so want to know all my options. No L5 team match interviews yet.
What level are you at Amazon? L6 requires another loop, but usually 3 interviews instead of a full loop. At least for SWE.
I got downleveled in my Amazon loop to L6 (but low L7 TC). I was hoping to do better at Google but they didn't even evaluate me at L6. If Google also downlevels me after considering me for L6 then I would accept that (and stay at Amazon). I have been put into an L7 role at Amazon with a genuine chance to prove myself so am inclined to stick with it.
Not sure I understand. Are you currently L6 or L7 at Amazon?
I am inclined to think recruiter just wants to quickly land me into a role rather than let me run through another loop. Also, would a different recruiter need to take me over?
Not necessarily. Same recruiter should be fine.
How long are you now already at amazon?
L6 at Amazon is L5 at google. And they google likes to down level new hires. I got L5 w/20 yoe https://www.levels.fyi/SE/Google/Amazon
BTW, TC-wise, Google is willing and able to comfortably beat my current TC even at L5. This is based on preliminary numbers given by the recruiter with clear indications they can move up from there. However, to give up a good position/team at Amazon would require an immediate level up as opposed to my current "try it, prove it" situation.
I’d just be aware of the “try it, prove it” mantra. That does not exist. It is usually a scam for making people to accept the downleveling. Make sure to manage up and keep whoever is pushing for it to be accountable i.e., keep reminding people that you should be promoted. Especially in the case of a L7 promotion at Amazon, which lots of people say it can take a while.
Good advice and I am very familiar with it. I have had people come to work for me having been promised a quick promo by a recruiter and me having to inform them it was nearly impossible (previous company). I certainly have alternate options if it doesn't work out. That's why I pushed for high or out of band TC for now.
...but most importantly I love my job at AWS and learning a lot so I am satisfied.
Recruiter got back to me and he is opening an L6 application for me that will allow HMs to see me in TM. They will have to arrange for at least 2 people to interview me for L6 and if they, and the HM support it, they will submit to HC. Sounds fair to me. He was going to close the L5 app but I said if he can get 400+ offer I might take it. He didn't blink and said he would submit to comp committee.

Wow 30yoe and they slotted you at 5? What a fucking joke
30 yoe doesn't necessarily mean he should be L6+ at Google. Most people in the industry with 30+ yoe would not do well as L6 at Google.
Yeah you need good BS skills for that.
