Google, Apple ditching college degree requirements

*How will this affect software engineering tech salaries?* Hi Blind Community, CNBC reported "More than a dozen companies, including Google, Apple and IBM, are no longer requiring applicants to have college degrees" (https://www.cnbc.com/2018/08/16/15-companies-that-no-longer-require-employees-to-have-a-college-degree.html?__source=facebook%7Cmain) How will this affect software engineering tech salaries? I have friends doing business/MBB consulting jobs that are thinking of switching into software engineering thru bootcamps and Master's degrees. But would this increased supply reduce tech compensation? Appreciate any thoughts you have. TC = below poverty line cause I'm not a software engineer and work in consulting.

It won't affect salaries. Most of these companies never really required degrees in the first place. The requirements on job postings is really a wish list you don't need to check off all of them.

LJL @ thinking they’re ditching degree requirements for jobs that matter. This is to give some flexibility to juice “diversity” numbers.

Tech was already more open to hs/college dropouts than any other industry. This doesn’t affect entry level salaries. I say this to any kid who will listen - the degree WILL raise the ceiling and the max earning potential as you near career endgame

Show me a large company head of marketing without a solid MBA, or a VP of research without a phD, and I’ll show you a bona fide genius. Climbing levels gets exponentially harder as it is, and lack of relevant degree will be the handicap that will limit most dropouts’ career growth

Many of those VPs are old people. When they went to school, CS wasn’t so hot. 20 years from now if you don’t have some CS training, you might as well be considered illiterate

Will make people with degrees more valuable. If they actually come from a college of substance

Recruiters already do that so interviewers don't need to.

one of my friends interviewed to Facebook, and got an offer. They didn't asked him for a degree throughout all the way. Seems like it's not very important (he's 6yoe). Maybe they ask from juniors, it makes sense to ask on first 1-2 yeo only. Another friend works in Dell (abroad) he's principal engineer, coded filesystems and stuff (fluidfs for example), has no degree, and never was asked for a degree throughout his career lol.

I think they are only ditching the requirement for certain races or woman. As we often say lack of women or black engineers in company is a direct result of lack of them in CS major of colleges because they are less interested in this major. These liberal companies just found a "quick fix".

But obviously this new step is not for experienced guys.

So why does google ask for college transcript then and SATs if they don’t matter? They shouldn’t matter for those with 2 YOE+

As long as you graduated from the school of leetcode, you are ok.

Uber mH7bSe May 20, 2019

I bet most of the bootcampers would be using python, and python only.

Google AIMLOK May 20, 2019

Python? Probably node.js :p

Gee ... for parents like me who sent their kids to elite schools, this obviously doesn't bode well. But as someone commented, your leadership ability, communication skills, decision making ability etc. doesn't come thru LC. It takes a good US undergrad education.
