What is the better career move if long term i am interested in creating production ML algos? This is what RS do at Lyft, while Google DS do metrics and experimentation. But Google is a better brand, more data, safe, likely better WLB (though Lyft seems goos as well), and more teams to move around inside (I’ve heard it is actually easy, not just broiler plate statement). There is also level difference, L5 at Lyft and L4 at Google. As for comp, I want to pivot discussion away from comp for now. I dont have G numbers yet, but if they will not be drastically lower (maybe they will and that will make the decision) then more important is career path and type of work. 5 yoe, PhD
Go for Lyft RS. That'd be a better career trajectory long term. In short term you may think Google's brand is better and stock is solid, but there's value in positioning yourself in an applied research role in teams building products in the scale of Lyft. It can be very impactful.
Plus L5>>L4
I already have 1.5 yoe in role similar to Lyft RS (building production algos). So I would not have to break into RS/AS/algos world, but I would miss some time growing in it and would have to make a return at some point. But as Google DS time will not be wasted, as I’d get experience working with much bigger data, build my experimentation/inference/metrics skills, and hopefully see a more sophisticated org and tech in Google. Is this accurate expectation and does my thinking make sense?
What is Lyft TC?

I do R&D in Google. DS don't generally even touch on our pipeline. Suggest Lyft RS
What product area are you in at Google?

Depends on TC gap.
If G close to matching G for sure
I’m a DS at google. Depends what team you’re matched with. A lot of DS does much more than “metrics and experimentation”. ML work can be part of your day-to-day but in terms of “creating production ML algos” that is more in-line with a ML SWE
What does product analyst do then if ds does metrics and experimentation? Why are they even different titles
That’s what I’m saying, DS doesn’t do only metrics and experimentation, PAs often do that. DS at google is a very stats-heavy position (ppl on my team do mostly statistical modeling) but day to day depends on the org.
I’d go for Lyft- better level (means better comp and career trajectory) and seems like you want to do production level algo. Doesn’t seem like G is offering you those aspects
L5 RS comp makes about double google L4 DS metrics comp.
Don’t have google numbers yet. Maybe there will be some significant difference, but recruiter did not tell me they will not be able to match Lyft numbers.
What's the Lyft numbers?
