"Google is trying to prevent another EU fine by pointing to rival business directories" My question is why is this needed? Is Apple expected to show ads for Samsung or other manufacturers when someone visits Apple's site? Or say if you own the most popular nail salon in town, do you need to carry ads for competing nail salons in your shop? Or to go even beyond businesses, should the most popular political party in a region carry ads for their rivals in their sites or offices? Why should Google take measures to cover for the inadequacies of their competitor's marketing teams? Google is not some charity business right, so what exactly is the logic of this antitrust clampdown. Source : https://www.engadget.com/2020/02/24/google-europe-searches-show-rival-directories/
Ok I get what you mean but still, it is their own site and they put their own money into running it. Why would they need to advertise their competition? From the article, would yelp now have a link to Google's results? This is what keeps bugging me.

The EU seems to think that the success of one company must have been caused by the downfall of one or more others, and that the successful company must be published for that. In the EU, it seems that antitrust is used similarly to how a PIP is used to fire someone. The end goal is to extract cash and promote "market competition", and antitrust is the legal hammer. No matter what the employee does, the employee will still fail the PIP.
