Does google hire engineering managers from outside? If so, is there any difference with the recruiting/interview process from regular software engineering role?
Looks like they do. I've seen a few Google Engineering Manager profile on LinkedIn who came to Google as Engineering Manager.
They do. The process is different but still highly technical.
Yep, I was hired as one. 2 system design, 1 code, 2 leadership, and lunch. If ur optimizing for Interview prep, focus on system design > coding > leadership (I’m assuming your rustier on technical)
Thanks guys for the inputs. So in summary higher number of manager experience with little hands-on coding is probably needed?
I wouldn’t summarize that way lol. The EM onsite loop has 1 coding and 2 system design rounds in addition to 2 leadership rounds. I am unsure of the weightage given to each round. Nevertheless be ready to code on the whiteboard.
EM is *highly* technical role. Requires a lot of hands-on coding/system design practice. But don't expect that EMs eearn more that SWEs on same level. Just less focus on coding, more paper work for your reporters.
