Hey Nooglers/Googlers - what’s going on with this GRAD and sudden surge in support-check-in posts in Google channel? Spill the beans and help prep others who are about to join. About to join in December as L6 SWE but the recent post hints at a similar perf management process like the one at Amazon. Check out this post! "Don't join Google for the next 1 year (Tech Industry)" https://us.teamblind.com/s/hXSGU6P2 Amazon TC 420K Offered Google TC 600K 13 yoe #tech #google #amazon #layoffs #pip #noogler
I'd join anyway. Who cares what's gonna happen longterm, that TC-bump is sweeeet, congrats 😎 ... Skilled and smart people will always find a job, also in recession climate
Visa situation makes it tricky for some folks unfortunately, esp when there is nothing wrong with the current company except the comp. You are also right though - the comp bump and stocks at a discount are hard to ignore 🙂
Your TC going to popcorn to 700 or even 800k once situation improves
That is the reason to consider a switch (also better benefits at Google) otherwise there is nothing wrong with my current team and wlb. Reaching that comp at amazon will take 2-3 years.
Then join before end of Q2 2023. I think stock going to recover by then
think meta not Amazon
I joined from Amazon recently, the internal Google channel is seeing a lot of support check in posts. Be careful.
I think it’s quarterly. @srnoogler - thanks for sharing that detail. What role+level did you join at?
I joined as an L5, was an L6 at Amazon. Surprisingly my work life balance is not that great at Google compared to Amazon.
Support check in means you are likely to get pipped. FYI google started a new performance review system called GRAD. And idk if support check in means 100% or 50% pip.
Nah, support check-in means you'll likely going to get a bad rating. Doesn't necessarily mean PIP. You can get a shitty rating without a PIP.
Do you think it’s people freaking out because the system is new / employees are not accustomed to it? Esp folks (both current and new) who joined with a coaster mindset.. this must have thrown them off!
Honestly, it's a lot of FUD on blind. I don't know if blind users just suck overall or if it's just a shitload of troll posts.

Are “quarterly check-ins” different than “support check-ins”?
Yes
I think that post you linked is BS. Google hired 10,000 Nooglers in 2022. Let's say 30% of them are on Blind, so we have 3000 Blinders who are Nooglers. Let's assume 5% of them are given support check ins (which would be a reasonable % of people who actually messed up in onboarding or were unfortunate with managers), and 20% of those are posted on Blind. That gives an expected number of 30 Blind posts from Nooglers about support check ins.The numbers are made up of course but should be within an order of magnitude of the correct numbers. The broader point I'm trying to make is that in this atmosphere of uncertainty and tension, i think we are prone to seeing trends where there are none. Nooglers posting about support check in right after GRAD is implemented (which means performance is anyway scrutinized more frequently than earlier aat G) does not mean that ALL Nooglers are being put on support check in. Tldr; you'll be fine 😎
Not all Nooglers are getting support check-in. But managers are being pressured to fulfill support check-in quota. Even managers think it's for preparing layoffs (as in, put your most disposable reports on support check-in as they might get fired in early 2023). And if you don't have an obvious low performer on your team, or someone who was open about considering to quit their job: the Noogler it is.
Could you let us know how you know this, besides speculation on Blind? What's the support check-in quota?

Are you interviewing with Google, or have an offer?
LMK if there is anything I can help with on what I learnt during my interviewing process and negotiations.
