Google L4 -> FB E5?

yoe: 6 and I've been at G for 6 years. Currently L4 and 300k tc. Was told by manager that I can go promo this year. Recently interviewed and got senior swe offers from a few companies, FB offer is 400k tc + 100k sign on. Also have offers from Apple, Amazon and Uber but not interested in the teams so won't take it. I have mixed feeling about whether to leave G so I'm seeking your thoughts(really appreciate that!). Pros staying at Google: 1. Really love the company. I like the fact that G builds a lot of great products e.g. Map, Arts, Search, Youtube and cares for social responsibility(at least according to my observation). 2. 1st class technology. E.g. internal infra, AI(I'm interested in ml and always love to learn though I'm not doing it in my current team), and a lot of internal learning resources. 3. Great work life balance. I got SEE when literally working 2 hours a day. 4. Engineer culture. Engs can usually decide what they wanna do based on their own interest. My team/manager never forces me to do projects I hate. Cons staying at Google: 1. Low tc. Was new grad when I joined Google and got low balled. 2. Slow promotion(which usually comes with work life balance). It's been harder to get promoted in G nowadays. Was told by manager that I can go promo this year, but who knows, there is no guarantee ever. 3. Sometimes hard to push things forward because everything is so slow. A lot of processes to go through and requests to be approved and usually takes a very long time. 4. Want to do ml but my current team doesn't, so will probably switch team after promo anyway. (Switching to a ml team in G would be relatively easy but I'm not switching now just because promo will be reset.) Pros joining F: 1. Much better pay. My currently tc is only 300k and would grow slowly even after promo to l5 according to my data points. FB offer is 425k tc if average sign on. 2. After being at G for 6 years, might learn new things joining F. 3. F seems to have more growth potential than G recent years(pls correct me). 4. Like the idea of bootcamp, wanna switch between a few teams and learn how different products work. (Don't like G's team match process since I know a lot of ppl who joined some who knows what they do team because of insufficient information). 5. Sounds like better/quicker career growth at F if I wanna work hard. At G, sometimes feel I'm retired age 30. Cons joining F: 1. Heard a lot of horrible stories about work life balance and peer pressure in F. A bit afraid of getting piped 2 months after I join :). (Any FB folks can comment on that?) 2. Not sure whether I could fit into the culture given I've been at G for 6 years. 3. I'm skeptical of how much value social networks adds to the society if any. Open to discussion. Maybe worst case I can return to G a few years later if I found I still love it. Not sure about our boomerang policy though, do I need to take interviews if I leave at l4 and wanna return at higher level? Would appreciate if you could share your experience/knowledge about how that works. #google #facebook

I would say hop on and see what other companies are doing after 6 years

Go to FB. You won't regret it. FB E5 refreshers are also far far better than G L4 refreshers. After stacking up refreshers, your FB TC will far exceed your G TC.

Go FB and come back at l5 after 12-18 months.

Why not Apple?

Amazon scorchnhot Jan 10, 2021

If one likes to be ghosted by recruiters that is the best option...

Apple Jyt543a Jan 10, 2021

OP already said, he has an offer from Apple. Amazon snowflakes, smh!

Apple Jan 10, 2021

Why do you even ask when we know you’ll just follow the 💰?

Google booleann Jan 11, 2021

6 years is pretty long for staying at same company...... . I feel you should experience a different culture. You can always come back to G later

@OP what's the team-match process at G? Does one have-to choose a team before joining G? > (Don't like G's team match process since I know a lot of ppl who joined some who knows what they do team because of insufficient information).

Pretty sure you’d need to interview again at G even if at L4?
