I have an upcoming Google onsite coming and currently just have 4 years of experience. recruiter told me its going to be easier to get hired as L4 which is my current level but i want to go for L5. Recruiter said its more like 5 and 5+ years to get L5. So question is what should I push for L4 or L5? also if I do go in as L4 how hard is it to be promoted to L5? YOE:4 TC:275
Wouldn’t there be too much performance pressure if you join directly as L5?
You’re not going to get L5. Level doesn’t matter anyways. An L4 at google makes more than most companies with 7-10 years experience. Go to total comp and be happy.
OP already makes more than most L4s do at google.
Seriously? 275k? LOL
L4. Unless you are very confident that you can breeze through interviews easily.
L4 is the likely outcome but if you’re happy where you are today, def push for L5
If you're already at 275 TC I would go for L5. You're not gonna have much upside in compensation if you only go for L4. Also, it's possible that if they thought you were good but didn't hit the L5 level, they'd just offer you L4
You should push to get L5 interview. If it doesn't work out, you'll still get L4, assuming you pass the bar
FWIW, I'm L5, but I don't think I can pass L5 interviews. Got here through promo. 😆
Ask for L5. A smart recruiter will indicate L4/L5 and make sure there are some design questions as well. If you can manage a strong hire from most (including the design question), the recruiter can recommend you as L5. Otherwise, L4 with a low-mid level L5 salary.
Are u done with ur onsite
Not yet, coming up in the New Years!
What did you get?
In terms of effort? We're comparing 2 hours of interviews vs. 2 years of strong perf for promo to L5 - it's your call.
This isn't as simple though, is it? Isn't it difficult to perform at L5 who is more of an L4 at this time? https://www.teamblind.com/post/8pncp5a6?cid
