Google L4 offer eval

L4 SW role in Google Cloud, PhD (from top tier West Coast school) + 1 yoe. Recruiter is offering 150k base, 260k RSU / 4 years, 15% bonus. Recruiter says this is the highest they can go. Have one competing offer from Cisco, their offering TC around 200k. Current TC is 180k. Am I being lowballed? Have an interview with FB in 2 weeks but G recruiter says my team match needs a answer by Friday, or else theyll move to other candidates. Should I take the chance with FB or take this offer? EDIT: Offered 20k sign-on.

How well did you do on your coding/interview?

Intel sdnftwbaby OP Nov 14, 2018

Not sure. Passed HC this week, so good enough. Thought they went well, recruiter dint share feedback.

This is ~~238K TC just one year after making 30k stipend in grad school. You are not being lowballed.

Samsung 5kt789 Nov 14, 2018

Say yes, you can always change after getting FB offer.

Epic WherePart4 Nov 14, 2018

Reneging after signing is not considered good.

Intel sdnftwbaby OP Nov 14, 2018

Dont want to be blacklisted by G.

Epic WherePart4 Nov 14, 2018

How much is the sign-on? This would have been a pretty great offer for someone with 1 YOE and masters. Not sure what weightage PhD will have.

Intel sdnftwbaby OP Nov 14, 2018

20k. Just edited my original post wid sign on.

Epic WherePart4 Nov 14, 2018

Also Google can always wait for 2 weeks considering their offer most of the times remains valid for an year.

Intel giw Nov 14, 2018

Base is good, negotiate for RSU to 300k and sigon to 50k

Intuit PXXH80 Nov 14, 2018

Agreed to stretch a little and see if they take it. What they offered now is pretty good for 1 yoe

Epic WherePart4 Nov 14, 2018

But is it good for PhD?

Uber lezgo⛷ Nov 14, 2018

seems low for top PhD and some experience you need better competing offers. also note Google HC pass is good for a year

Intel sdnftwbaby OP Nov 14, 2018

So Google wont give me a good offer unless I have strong competing offers? The other offer I have is too low I guess.

Amazon KwTk33 Nov 14, 2018

HC pass means HC recommendation to hire?

Do you like this team more than potentially better comp? If you want to improve the offer you have to play hardball. Also is that an onsite FB interview? You probably don’t want to get G to wait too long. And for similar offers I would certainly pick G over FB. Just tell the recruiter that you would appreciate if the HM can wait for you. If not, you are happy to try other teams. And X/X/X are the numbers that you are willing to sign right now.

Intel sdnftwbaby OP Nov 14, 2018

To be honest I'm fine with the comp in that it's far greater than what I make now and my competing offer. I just don't want to get lowballed, want a fair offer.

LinkedIn dashazhu Nov 14, 2018

But if you don’t want to get lowballed you need to be ready to walk away from that offer.

Man, every PhD candidate is so whiny. 1 yoe and wanting 240k+ TC

Intel sdnftwbaby OP Nov 14, 2018

Lol I think everyone in the Bay area is whiny. I'm just trying to catch up financially to those with better foresight who started working after BS/MS.

Your offer is good for a year isn't it? See what FB offers first

The New York Times moony Nov 14, 2018

This is a pretty standard offer. Especially given your low yoe.

Lowball offer bc of RSU and G recruiter is unnecessarily pushing you. Don't let them do that. Do FB interview, push them with G offer and get the offer ASAP, strongly state you need 260K+ TC (never tell G numbers) to prevent lowballing, and FB will give you 240~250K offer. Now up to your skills to negotiate with G. If you give the numbers right away they will probably give you FB +5~10K. Tell them FB numbers are much higher, and you might be able to pull 20K+. Got 250K+ TC with this when joining FAANG as fresh PhD SWE.
