Google L4 vs Msft L62 offer

Hello all,

Few days ago I had a post on Msft vs AMZ offer. It seems Msft offer was favored amongst the crowd. I do now have another question on offer and was hoping you guys can help me consider them. I am at greater Seattle Area. 4.5YoE

For MSFT L62
150K base
80k Signon (over 1 yr)
200K stock (over 4 yrs, 25% each)
10-15% Annual bonus according to recruiter
New team with interesting Tech
~ 242 TC

For Google L4
146K base
0k Signon
270K stock (over 4 yrs, 36%/28%/20%/16%)
15% Annual bonus
Think it's with Google Cloud
~ 235 TC

I tried to have Google matched MSFT's but was told that since MSFT offer was only verbal (I provided screenshot of the email communication) Google is not willing to match the offer. (Microsoft only gave the verbal offer, I think it's that you only received the official offer letter once you agreed to accept verbal offer)

And after that since matching didn't work out, I asked for a signon bonus and was completely rejected by Goog.

I know I was lucky to get teammatched at Google right after HC cleared and it would boost my resume and open doors later on but I was bumped by getting rejected by either salary matching or getting a small signon.

I want to know which offer do you consider better, and is there any factors that I may have overlooked?

Thanks in advance

G has a significant stock refresher starting year 2. Microsoft doesn’t refresh much stock unless you get higher level

  • I don’t understand your problem. They said no sign on ? Why don’t you get Microsoft offer letter and then reject them after google matches it .

    • Yeah, the recruiter will be disappointed they are not getting a bonus obviously, but a reasonable company as such won’t blacklist you for verbally committing and then deciding something else. They may feel somewhat wronged if you accept a written offer and then don’t show up to work though, as they’ll have to fire you :D

Blind is full of companies rescinding an offer letter after giving. Remember the guy who quit his job and then his new offer got rescinded?. That’s how this is. Take a chill and do what’s best for you. It’s okay. Microsoft won’t blacklist you if you want to join them coming from google. It’s a no brainer

  • Cant comment on either. But here is a story:

Roughly a decade ago: Someone joined my team at 62 I was 60 then. This guy was 2 year junior to me. Technically good. I didn’t have an way to compare him with me.

Within 6 months he was asked to undergo training and qualify as 62 or quit. He ended up quitting.

Before he left, I had a chance to talk to him on what happened.

He had multiple offers before joining MS. His initial offer was for a L60 but in the bidding process he went up to the L62 salary. MS made a competitive offer compared to his ADOBE offer.

No one told him the expectation of L62 at that point and was shown the door.

My suggestion: Offer matching is good but evaluate the expectation increase with that too.

  • Accept Microsoft get official letter then present to Google to beat it by at least %10 more since you already accepted MSFT and dont want to risk rejecting them. Once they beat it, tell MSFT that Google actually beat the offer and if it is possible to at least match the offer to start with a better motivation, I am sure MSFT would match that %10. Then proceed with MSFT since Google didn’t take you seriously, once get senior and have your bonus vest you can reach out to Google for L5

Take Google!! You can grow much faster and fairly at Google, compared to MS!
Promos are upto your PEERS and not your manager....at MS, it's entirely up to your manager.

Also, MS pay us skewed higher towards lower levels as bait-n-switch....once you get (suckered) in, you'll find your TC will decrease over time, while your peers goes yp

    • Okay but since when can you negotiate after accepting an offer? Don't think that would work.

Google for a year, if you don’t get a promotion and/or big bump, leave. Negotiate sign on too.

Keep in mind that if you join Google after December 31st, you won’t be eligible for Stock refreshers in December 2021.

OP, following github's suggestion, you don't even need to try, because within 1 year, around 100% you will not get promotion or big bump, even you are very likely will not get any refresh by the time. Go for Microsoft.
