Hi I cleared the final rounds and expecting an offer soon. The recruiter has asked for my current salary and RSUs which I have not provided yet. How do I negotiate? Do they ask for paystubs and RSU account statements. How do they verify those documents ?
Seriously such a load of shit that this question is still even legal.
Tell them your expectations, it's ok to expect more than what you are making now. If you say nothing, they will probably low ball you.
I've heard if you go too high they may decline to make an offer.
The recruiter can't submit your packet to the hiring committee without a previous salary. But make no mistake...they're not asking for your current salary...interpret the question as to what your expectations are. RSU's? That might help if agreeing a signing bonus since you'll have to walk away from unvested shares. And no they won't ask for pay stubs. Negotiate hard! If you got to this stage, you have the upper hand because they don't get competing packets from multiple candidates...too much work.
You should politely deflect and state that your qualifications and achievements merit the salary you desire. They are expecting you to give this information out and I doubt would provide you their employees salary information
As of January this year it is illegal to discriminate based on a previous salary. So they can ask, yes, but hopefully they are aware of the law to not make a decision based on it.
Don't lie about salary. That can be verified with a background check. Equity cannot. You can try to fib about that, but honestly coming from another tech company they already know what to expect about how much equity you already have based on level and tenure. So if you inflate it, they'll likely spot it.
Salary is not included in a background check
Depends on the company. The background check process includes a "person x states they're currently employed with title X and salary Y, do you confirm this?". Some companies will acknowledge salary verification, others will refuse it. But the check is definitely attempted.
I would state that your current employer considers salary information confidential and you are professionally bound to keep that information confidential. I would then provide a range of salary that is acceptable to you, equity required to make you move and ask for a signing bonus for the equity you forgo this year as any stock has a vesting schedule. I agree with the other comments, negotiate hard. The first offer will not be the best.
Don't assume recruiting doesn't have this information already. They do not have yours specifically but they have an appropriate rate based on your role and the company. Keep in mind Google prides themselves on being in the top 90% of compensation for the industry. So if your are within the range they expect they will likely believe you. If you get stupid and come in with a ridiculous amount for your role they will know. Be reasonable, bluffing 5-10% is fine, more and you may price yourself out of the MRP for the role. At which point they can look at your rate and say you should be an L6 based on comp and decline to give you an offer. L5 is a good role at Google, they will make a fair and market generous offer. Good luck and see you around...
I think you mean 90th percentile or top 10%
Yep... Thats what I meant. Thanks
never reveal your position during negotiations... its a card game, play your hand closely and demand the high side of THEIR range
That'll actually backfire on you. You'll be on the high end of the salary cap and won't get a raise. They will expect you to start performing at the next level before becoming proficient in the level you were hired at.
certainly possible... depends what value you place on your skillset and how you want to play the corporate game

Do they force you to tell them your current salary? Can you say you don't want to tell them?
Never ever disclose your salary information, it's against your current company terms and conditions. Always provide a salary range . Well, you could always buffer it up the way you want ;)
