Google L5 and career path (India)
Folks, I am currently in Intel, Bangalore as a hardware engineer. 14 YOE in total. Have an offer from Google at L5. Felt it is at-least one level down. Few queries 1. If I join in L5 how easy it is to level up to upper ones ? 32 Should I take this hardware offer given google is betting big on hardware with it's own chips ? But at the same time team is new ,will be in a start-up mode and will take time to reach baseline. -Sintelh
Dang! That’s good money for India. Far more than what Google L5 makes in US if PPP is taken into account.

L5 to L6 how much time it takes at Google and how easy it is?
Did you know the initial interview was for L4 at Google?
Nope. I came to know that I was leveled at l4 after intitial rounds by HC and management wanted more rounds to be done for level up.
L9 Intel = L5.5 Goog.. you are not down leveled comp wise. You are downleveled scope wise...but that's a price you pay to get into something better in the long term
If I understand you correct because I am in L5 the scope of responsibilities you get will be less or limited compared to L6?
Wouldn't it map better to L6 at Google, which is staff? Unless you are transferring from India to North America and they are discounting the experience.

Google doesn't hire L6 directly.. it is rare.. There are many people with 10-25 years of experience at L5.
Oh ok. I know 2 people hired at L6 in Google hardware Bangalore. They both are around 18 years. Probably they are quite good.

If you go in at L7 at Google India, as someone posted elsewhere, you will be eaten alive. It's likely you could run a life on L6

Don't have the link - but basically at L7 you will need to put in with lots of politics and the survival or failure depends more on politics, how many directors support you, than anything else. You may have been under leveled on L5 instead of L6, but then, Google these days under levels people a lot.
