Google L5/Meta E5/LinkedIn staff SWE expectations

Could someone summarize what is expected at these levels for a SWE?

Is there a minimum yoe to be considered for an interview?

How much depth in system design knowledge is expected?

What about cross team initiatives, leading projects with other people?

How does it compare to MSFT L63?

Currently L62, 220k, 5 yoe + master’s CS

  • Google L5 and LI staff Id consider about a half step at least above E5 expectations wise.

    Staff at LI is expected to impact direction across multiple teams. Vision aspect of starting to drive and have future product vision.

    L5 at google is often TL of a team for 5 to 6 eng. Create concrete solutions to ambiguous problems.

    E5 is kinda half code monkey half lead. Thing designs small products or bigger features, does some cross functional. Might lead 2 e3/e4 eng. Less aspirational vision wise that’s more E6 territory. Can identify a space where a project would help and get it off the ground and launch. Design processes at FB are much lighter as well, so while external bar has SD internal promos often couldn’t pass that interview.
