Google L6 TPM Advice Needed

Nov 7, 2019 16 Comments

I had onsite interviews at Google MTV last month. Did not get an offer for the position interviewed: was told that another candidate was in more advanced stages of the process. But based on positive feedback from onsites the recruiter is trying to place me elsewhere. I am faced with two problems:

1. The recruiter sent out my resume and heard back from a couple of groups of partial/marginal interest to me. On the other hand, I found some interesting TPM positions in other groups, but the recruiter cannot get an answer if they are interested. How can I get these hiring managers to look at my resume? Would an internal reference help?

2. Had a preliminary compensation discussion with the recruiter: the onsite feedback is strongly trending to L6, but the final level will be decided by the hiring committee. Recruiter quoted a combined L5/L6 range of 140 - 200 base, 15% bonus, 250 - 350 RSU, 10 - 40 sign-on. Based on what I read on Blind for Google L6 TPM, the bonus, RSU, and sign-on numbers look quite low. I do not have any counteroffers at the moment (interviewing at Amazon next week), so I went along for now. The recruiter says that the only thing affecting the offer is the feedback from the onsites and my 15+ YOE and PhD don't matter. How should I navigate this situation? What is a reasonable set of numbers?

I would appreciate any advice or help. If anyone is aware of TPM openings, I would appreciate a reference.

Did Google reach out to you or you reach out to them?

Years ago I posted resume once on their job site but never heard back

So no HC yet? Level has not been determined? ...but you are in Team Matching? From what I found, the jobs that are posted are just bait for that role. The process is so long I can't see how you could land a position you actually apply for.

Yes, the process is: onsite, team matching, then hiring committee. You are right: posted TPM jobs are just headlines for respective groups/orgs.
On the plus side, the onsite results are valid for a year, so if a matching position is found, only a conversation with manager is needed.

No coding. In fact, come to think of it, I was not asked a single truly technical question.

I am to have another interview with a senior TPM to reinforce L6 for HC. They are making me jump through the hoops.

Yeah, L6 is tough to get, esp. if not coming in from one of the major techs

I just passed HC and was put on L5 PgM, not Technical PgM. No team match yet. Recruiter suggested pausing until Jan when new reqs open up. Recruiter says PgM and TPMs are on the same ladder. Any wise thoughts?

Hate to say it but, based on past experience here, you will be downlevelled to L5 and given a low ball offer = the low numbers you were quoted.
Need to have another offer to counter.
How did the HC come out?

    Good Luck OP!
Are there any coding rounds in onsite or only system design?
