Cleared interviews for Google L7 EM and Amazon L7 SDM. My priorities are reasonable WLB (< 50 hrs/wk) and a place to work for next 5 years. Not interested in L8. Not interested in growing scope. Which of the two options is better ?

Before someone blindly bashes Amazon and glorifies Google, I had good experience at Amazon before and no visibility into L7 role at Google. Someone who has seen both pls comment. Thx.

Have been L7 at both Google and Amazon. No comparison, I'd go to Google even if they paid me 20% less. Both places I did very well. But at least for my team at Amazon, I was a punching bag with no WL balance and little actual freedom to make org decisions. At Google I have a lot more ability to actually set a charter and have large strategic impact, and with support from my leadership. Be warned that at Amazon L7 is very different from L6. At L6, you can focus on your team and execution and your L7 is hopefully more like a friend who can help protect you. At L7 at Amazon everyone is your enemy and you fend for yourself.

My experience at AWS is that the L7s in my org are pretty collaborative. Some have pretty reasonable WLB, some are workaholics. At L7, it’s mostly up to you what your style is and how much you delegate to your team. Being a genius workaholic usually results in getting a lot done and faster promotion. Being a workaholic dolt who can’t delegate generally keeps you from being promoted to L7. L7 SDM might lead a development team of 8 delivering infrastructure that is critical to the company. You might also lead an organization of 150 to deliver products with hundreds of thousands of customers.

  • Doesn’t Google L7 have scope closer to Amazon L8, meaning the Amazon L7 role would have less scope?
