Went through L8 Dir. Eng. Interviews but role was pulled (reorg) even before HC process. Recruiter said feedback was good and to wait for another opportunity. He did suggest a Cloud team that was looking for L7 Mgr. Coming from prev VP Engg to current Sr Dir role in software group (via acquisition), and very actively looking to join another company, should I wait for an L8 opportunity or try to get in at L7? Would a move to L7 be considered a level down? How difficult is L7 to L8 promotion once hired?
Would you tell what the interview questions at such level are? Not looking for specific questions but just want to know what sort of things they ask.
Mostly leadership oriented and domain knowledge. But mostly leadership.
Hmm, I'm wondering how do they evaluate the answers. Like in coding there are vivid things to validate if the answer is correct, optimal, etc., but when talking about leadership (and it's literally just talking) how do they differentiate between a good leader and a bad one?

Definitely wait at least a little longer for an L8 opportunity if you basically passed HC for L8.
Thanks for the advice. Aren't most of these roles identified and budgeted early in the year? With the reorgs, wondering if waiting would help.
Also, it never went to HC since apparently it has to be for a specific role opening. Since role went away, they did not move forward with HC but I got feedback from the recruiter.
L8 SWE is not same as L8 Eng Director. They are different ladders (SWE vs EM). Never seen Google hire L8 SWE externally (I am sure it has happened, but super rare), have seen a lot of external L8 Directors though. L8 SWE > L8 Director in all aspects. If you match as L7 senior manager with a team that's 30+ people with other L7 managers reporting to you, take it. If you are good, you will be Director in a year or two.
I’d imagine the slow promos google is famous for are even slower at the high levels
Updated post to reflect EM. It's a management role. The L7 is a new role with no team so unlikely it would grow so quickly to have more L7 under this role even though it's in cloud.
Hold out for L8. L7 offer is probably similar to what you make already.
