I was approved for SWE L4 back in March 2020 for a role at Google NYC. Four months later, I haven't received a single interview request from a hiring manager. From what I heard, hiring is currently slow at Google, and NYC office is especially competitive. Unfortunately, I don't have an option to relocate at the moment.

Is there anything I can do to advance my application? My Google recruiter does not have any advice for me aside from waiting. I will appreciate any advice from anyone in a similar situation, or anyone who is currently at Google. I am still very excited to join the company, but loosing hope.

My experience is mostly in desktop/mobile application development (Windows, Mac, iOS, Android). But I spent the last 4 years working on distributed systems, built on AWS.

Well since Google is WFH till next July. Couldn’t you just choose any cities that has openings and try to transfer after a year?

My concern is that if I'm not able to transfer than I may loose the job. I have suggested to the recruiter that I am open to working remotely for a team in a different city, but that wasn't an option.

My understanding is that a different city is only an option if I'm willing to relocate. And I won't be able to make that commitment as my circumstances are unlikely to change.

If you’re open to SWE-SRE roles you can see if your recruiter can find those for you? Might be hard since iirc you would’ve needed to show strong signals in your system design interview but could be worth a shot

That's worth a shot. I'll float the idea by the recruiter. The SRE book (https://landing.google.com/sre/sre-book/toc) piqued my interested in the role, but it seemed like it could be a stretch of my experience. I also don't think I did particularly well in the system design interview. Even though I naively thought I have plenty of experience designing/building systems. :)

Same boat mate , completed my onsite waiting since March for team match . Recruiter told me not to get my hopes high before October but now after google recent announcement I don’t think anything will happen before Mar-May 2021.

That sucks but nothing to do about it .
I tried applying to other roles as well but the recruiter told me that there is a complete freeze on hiring (last I spoke to him was in April)

Sorry to hear that. It is a difficult position to be in. I am planning to have another conversation with my recruiter soon. If hiring is still slow with no sign of recovery, then I'm thinking to start interviewing again.

Are you interviewing with other companies? My fear is that my interviewing shape will further decline if I keep on waiting. And I keep seeing a fair amount of negative sentiment about Google in general here. Of course, I'd prefer to make my own opinion. But I think I do have to factor that into the decision making.
