Google Offer

I'm negotiations with recruiter on an L4 engineering position in Seattle. Offer is currently 235k, which is less than I currently make, and I feel is very low. Recruiter says that offers now are conservative compared to 6 or 12 months ago, but I don't know if I buy it. I have 10 YOE, and would expect top of band comp at L4. How can I improve my offer from G? I'm awaiting an SE offer from FB also.. 10 YOE / 240 TC

Get competing offer from Uber or Airbnb and ask G to match. You have FB offer tell fb you have G offer and ask them to raise

Google Googleplex Feb 12, 2020

They were pretty conservative 6-12 months ago too...

According to Levels, 265k is average in Seattle. I see a bunch of offers in the 230 to 240 range, and a handful in the 290 to 300 range. Is that due to experience, or competing offers?

Due to stock price increase

The struggle with G lowball offer is real. Anyone who got in before 2018 feel lucky.

10yoe l4...sounds like a lowball

Google should make an effort to match if you present them with a higher offer from a competitor. Facebook in particular is pretty commonly used to pump up goog offers. Once you get that, you can play them off each other to make it more reasonable.

What’s the offer breakdown

Amazon KvwO01 OP Feb 12, 2020

148 base, 65 stock/yr, 22 bonus

Microsoft yegeme Feb 12, 2020

Yoe? L4 right? And no competing offers?

Top of band is 50k North of there I believe but you'll never sniff it without competing offer. They move the number fast if you have one though.

Intuitive Surgical yololehihu Feb 12, 2020

50k? Is that the sign on lol?

Intuitive Surgical yololehihu Feb 12, 2020

Top of band is 320k roughly

You should be more worried about you getting L4 than pay itself. It's not easy to get promoted at Google and you should've been L5..

Amazon KvwO01 OP Feb 12, 2020

So would you recommend I decline the offer and try again after 1 year at L5?

EATON Façebøōk Feb 12, 2020

Depends on what your other options are and how badly you want to be at "Google". :)

If you don’t tell them you have competing offers then Google with low ball you. They seem to be doing it to everyone these days including me. My strong competitive offers were the only way I got their low ball offer increased in the end by literally 45%. Yes this is how low the low ball can get. And even with the other offers their first offer was a really bad low ball and I kept saying No, you have to beat these. They behaved like a used car dealership with the old “let me check with my team for a better deal” and we did this back and forth three rounds before they gave me something I could say Yes to. And it took almost two weeks to negotiate.

Microsoft yegeme Feb 12, 2020

What was your first n final offer? Breakdown? Level? Thanks!

Google de01lpv Feb 12, 2020

I don’t want to say too much detail but they were tight with the base salary increase but raised the stock by hundreds of thousands of dollars. They seem to have more flexibility on that part.

But with yearly refreshers and possible promotion won't be reach 400k$ range in next 5 years?
