Got offer from Google (L3). Offer is 190k (135 base + 15% bonus + 140k stocks over 4 years). For the first year sign on bonus is 20k. Currently at Amazon bay area (L5 - promoted like 3 months back) and making about 215k Is it a good idea to take a hit at compensation and level for Google? YOE - 2 yrs Edit - They increased to 250k :) Thanks for all the suggestions :)
Nope
People willing to accept a pay cut to suck up to Google for the brand name is the reason Google is low balling everyone. Brand name isn’t worth that much, IMO. What’s your base currently? I’m guessing it’s 160k+? I’d not do it.
Normal offer for L3, slightly above avg
Have you tried telling Google your current TC?
They are saying that they can only take counter offers and not your current salary for negotiation. Doesn't make sense to me
That sounds like some BS. From my understanding Google leaves the offer open for a decent amount of time so I'd recommend interviewing anywhere else, even if it isn't as prestigious, just to get them a counter offer
It really depends on your end goal. If you want to build your resume and can afford the pay cut, then do it. You'll recoup that money in the long run. If your resume is already stout, then negotiate.
This is a decent offer at L3 - but you are likely at the cusp of L3/4 and they’re erring on the low end of leveling. I would personally hang out at Amazon a bit more and nail the L4 offer at Google later.
For much time is the Google offer valid?
I’d also like to mention that you’ll have to work hard again to get promoted to L4 at Google. Promos at google aren’t easy and keep that in mind
I got 235k for L3, also coming from Amazon but with fewer YOE. They will go up
Please do the following: be bold and upfront. Tell Google your ecstatic about the chance to work for them. But, that the offer on the table would be a 25k pay cut from where you currently are at Amazon. Say, despite the fact I’m actively looking for a change, and that your still super excited about the opportunity to join Google in the role you’re pursuing, that you’d really like to be financially excited too, and at the current offer, you’d be taking a pay cut. Phrase it this way “candidly, with the current network I’ve built at Amazon, even taking a straight lateral move (same salary) from Google would be like a decrease, given I’m going in to a brand new company. Immediately reinforce how excited you are about the gig at Google, but that you also want to feel truly excited about the financials of the offer too, which in its present form, your really not all that thrilled. A good HR person (if they truly want you) will say a few different things. Could say “this is the best we can do”, to which you say “I need to think about this. Would you do me a favor, and at least ask if anything can be done? I’m so excited, but if it truly will be a pay decrease, I need to take a couple days before I make my final decision. (Honestly this is probably the worst case scenario, but you’re still framing the dialog appropriately). Ideally, they’ll say, “let me go see what I can do, and potentially re-ask what your current salary is”. Make sure you commit to a date mutually that you will come back together within 36 hours to see the result, and block the time before you’re off the phone. The best case would be they literally ask you what you want. Here is where you have a chance to ask for the moon. You’re likely not getting a 50% pay increase, but google has a ton of money, and will pay if your good. Trust you are. Ask for a 15-20% bump on your Amazon TC, and again commit to a time within 36 hours where you and HR will come back and make a formal decision together. Be gracious. Thankful. Show interest, and you’ll have the chance to ask for more money. Best of luck.
Thanks so much for the detailed post :)..I was given a lower offer initially which when I negotiated went to the current offer which is still not satisfying. Will negotiate more :)
You clearly do not understand how to properly use “you’re” and “your”. It’s painful to read
No way. Ask Google to increase your salary. YOE?
Updated :)
Similarly, ask Google to update your salary. :)
