What kind of a role is that in Google? How does the comp look in MTV. Day to day responsibilities? What's the standing vs SWE role? Was reached out by a recruiter, she was vague and beating around the bush, wouldn't answer any of my straight shooters. Blind can help?

Gotcha. That helps. Thanks!

The recuiter was being vague because straight answers will scare off most Software Engineers. PTMs work in gTech, Google’s product support org. It is also a business org so it is very political and I’ve heard gTech goes through a re-org every six months or so. It is also an org where MBAs rule over technical folks. PTMs can write a lot of code but from what I heard it is mostly simple scripts and if lucky, some web development. I interview a lot of them when they try to transfer to my ladder and their coding skills does not meet the Google SWE bar. Not even close. I know quite a few PTMs and they hate their job and their org. Most are trying to transfer to a PM, TPgM, or SWE role but almost always end up stuck within gTech because they get rejected by eng teams. You’ll see the gTech folks playing musical chairs within their org as a result, desperately trying to find a gTech team that sucks less than their current team.

Ouch! I'm going to politely turn down. Not sure what triggered to cold call me for a PTM. I'm a SWE and haven't asked for new positions in LI.

The recruiters are cold calling every engineer they can find on LinkedIn because they are desperate. I heard there is a gTech referral blitz going on right now. One high-level PTM that I personally know even reached out to me to see if I am open to moving into a technical leadership role within gTech. I politely declined.

It can be good as a way to get into Google, assuming you want that and can’t get in any other way. All of the good PTMs transfer out of gTech to Eng or PM orgs within 1-2 years. But this is a minority percentage overall (maybe ~20%?), and the rest are stuck with nowhere to go. PTM play second fiddle to PM and Eng. (source: I was a PTM for two years and transferred to Eng. The transfer is not easy and most don’t make it.)

Does the transfer to eng org has a full fledged swe interview?
