I recently interviewed with Google. After all the rounds, they dinged me giving the feedback 'not creative enough.' Can someone please help me double click into the feedback for the pm position, and how things can be approached better next time.
Why do you need creativity at google? When did they release the last creative product? This is a serious question

Creativity within google is generally respected. Admittedly, this doesn't always show up on the consumer side, but I can assure you we launch creative products and enhancements often, even if they don't stick.
Creativity is a major component in problem solving, working with stakeholders, selling a vision and building towards it. The product can still be ‘uncreative’ at the end of it all, but without creativity at every stage, it’s destined to fail.
Well put.
I did two onsites for goog a while ago about 3 months apart on the sales/BD side so not PM but will share my experience. 1st set didn’t get an offer and feedback was around creativity and thinking big. TBH I know i messed up one series of questions In one of the interviews and didn’t really get a good vibe from the interviewer who happened to be the HM so IMO that’s why I didn’t get an offer. Second set of onsites I spent a bunch of prep time on how to grow the business 10x (one of the core questions they often ask right) and had a really good set of interviews. Got an offer for that role. So point is that it is something you can probably prep better for and can be overcome from my experience.
I am guessing you couldn't help them sell Allo either?
Were you asked design or grow a feature questions?
Product design
I do not know your specific interview questions.. but THINK BIG is what they looking for with reasonable ideas behind. It sounds like BS but it’s not. E.g. what would you propose for Google Cloud to become #1 beating AWS? Obviously even Sundar Pichhsi have no idea and he will never achieve this. But they are looking for broad ideas ..
It is BS because it is easy to reject candidates without giving them the real reason. PM interviews have a lot of BS built in unlike Engg where it is more black and white.
Agree.. is too broad set of topics.
Had the same feedback a few years back. I know what I did wrong though. They asked me how to build a theme park and I said it very very seriously that Google should not build a theme park because it's not core to their skillet. If they want to build a theme park, they should buy Disneyland first and then learn from running that business. They didn't like that answer.
