Recently interviewed with Google SWE , I kinda screwed it up and they ask me if I want to try a SETI role , I passed it and land an offer . If I accept this offer , can I immediately interview for a SWE role again once I get in Google or I need to wait for a year ??
Yep I know q couple of frustrated SETIs who want to move to SWE. It will take years and you will likely get downslotted when converting.
But what if I interview again ?? I mean if the interview process is the same internally and externally , Why do they downplay the internal hiring just because I used to be a SETI ??
I've never heard of this been done. It doesn't make sense since seeing your work first hand (code, docs etc) should be better indicator of your abilities than a couple of interviews. I imagine you would have to quit in order to go through the interviews again
I've done this personally and know a few friends who've done it too. It's not that hard, but a tad annoying. You will need to wait a year, and have good review marks, then find a team needing a swe (not hard - some just stay in the current project and just switch to swe side). You can either do a conversion interview (2 coding questions) or work on the new team in a SWE capacity for a quarter or two and write a letter with peer support + technical artifacts (code, design docs, etc). I haven't heard of downslotting or anything like that as all eng roles are meant to me equivalent skills wise. With all that said... You're going to spend a year on a project. Seti projects CAN be really fun and interesting (admittedly not all). When picking a team, make sure to find a manager you like (who will support your decision) and try to find a project aligned to your interest and growth areas. Good luck and welcome (hopefully) to Google!
I've done this. Not too hard. No interviews needed. Just find a SWE team and work as a SWE for 6 month. Then your title can be changed to SWE.
I have done it. Wait for 1 years, find SWE team, work for 6 months and convert
It makes sense to wait for 1 year. You can try to get a promo during the time then switch right away
Waiting for 1 year is not for promo. I don't see l5 to l6 happening in 1 year. In 1 year you will idea of Google infra, type of work SWE/seti does etc
If u want to rest n vest at L4, doesnt matter, pays almost the same. Convert is annoying af, might as well do it now tbh. You will have to find a manager who accept you, which is hard already. Most good teams have a ton of internal swe lining up, why would they have to go through the hassle of taking you.
SETI has same coding skills as SWE just the focus is on internal tools. Transfer between is easy and requires no interview.
No you can’t. It’s difficult to go to dev position from SETI. If you want to be seti then go to google. Don’t go there just in hope of becoming dev. It’s bad experience for both G and you.
