If the TC were similar for both roles, which one would you recommend and why?
I would think sre would have low wlb because your job is make sure shit doesn't hit the fan and deal with it when it does
Amazon Alexa SDM
Alexa SDM is one of the hardest roles in Amazon today . I was one for 2 years and, while you are part of some great products , wlb is terrible .
Wlb is terrible but it isn't hard. Quality bar is fairly low on the software and mostly you are squeezing sdes to churn out features.

Enraged that kids prefer KPop to Bollywood. Installed cams in their rooms.
Alexa SDM for more product and market focussed role with low WLB for team and yourself. Google SRE manager for cushy lifestyle. Source: I worked at both companies in fairly similar roles.
Thanks, this is helpful. What about opportunity for learning and impact? Also is it possible/easy to move to a regular Dev Engg Manager role within Google after SRE Manager for a couple of years?
Dev managers are a rarity at Google. This move likely won't happen. You'll learn decently in either role.
