Google SWE Pay Raises

I just received an offer from Google for L4 SWE at only 210 TC, but it's for Austin, TX so I feel like it's an ok offer (still negotiating). But I was wondering what I might be able to realistically expect in the way of pay raises over time (without getting promoted). Does anyone know what raises might look like in frequency and amount and whether it will be more base increase or equity? Also, is it based purely on merit or does tenure play a significant part? I'm coming in with 4.5 yoe at L4 and will be working on the Google Cloud team. I know I can ask my recruiter, but I thought they might sugar coat it a little if I ask them.

Does that include Y1 signing bonus?

FJA sm1001 OP Jul 16, 2019

No, I also got a 35K signing bonus on top of the 210 TC.

Shouldn't ur signing bonus be included in ur TC?

What teams are in Austin?

Google m6r4 Jul 16, 2019

There is a random variety of teams, but the focus going forward will be CorpEng (internal facing products)

Microsoft Rydia Jul 16, 2019

Internal facing products...? Sounds boring. I'd want to work on customer/external things.

Your offer is really good for 4.5 yoe in Austin in general. You can get more from Google for L4, but it will take a competing offer. Amazon, FB, and Apple might be places to look for that, if you wanted to.

Offer breakdown?

FJA sm1001 OP Jul 16, 2019

130K Base 15% Target Bonus 240K RSU (over 4 years) 35K Signing Bonus (So really it's 209.5 TC not including the signing bonus.)

Microsoft Vbsm66 Jul 16, 2019

Nice, this is really good for Austin

What strategies are you using for negotiation ?

FJA sm1001 OP Jul 16, 2019

They came back and said they were firm on the offer so I just accepted it. I made a case that my current income is higher when adjusted for the cost of living where we currently live and also said that I would likely get a counter offer at my current employer. I don't have competing offers because I wasn't actively interviewing. Google approached me about interviewing. I didn't want to lie about other offers or anything like that.

Dell LUHV04 Jul 16, 2019

So they basically gave you a higher offer with your point of - your employer will compete on the google offer ?
