I just received two SWE offers (new grad), one from Google for Security and Privacy and the other from Microsoft for the Azure Auto ML Team. It's hard to get information for exactly what I would be doing at Google since Security and Privacy is very secretive but the Azure Auto ML Team sounds exactly like the kind of the work I want to be doing. On the flip side, it looks like Google has prestige and more potential for career growth. Any insight would be helpful, especially for Security and Privacy at Google.
Is the google offer for SWE or ISE? If you enjoy security there are a lot of cool internal opportunities regardless.
It's SWE
It's a tough call, but I don't think you can go wrong either way. Google might be a better name on your resume, and you can always move groups internally if you find you don't enjoy the work.
A lot of Google's security and privacy is very ML heavy. Federated learning, crazy distributed crypto. Super cool stuff. Auto ML is boring for actual ML people. It's more fun to solve real problems than to build platforms for other people. I would take Google in a heartbeat. (I'm an ML scientist)
I second this.
How was google privacy interview?
If I had to do security and privacy related work I’d want to kill myself, but that’s because I have no interest in those. How do you feel about it?
I'd be very happy if I was on one of the teams that use ML for fraud/abuse detection, but it's still unclear to me what most of the work entails.
What's wrong with S&P? I don't think the work elsewhere at Google on average is much more interesting, not everyone can be Brain. And they actually have a few very interesting areas IMHO, like project zero and reverse engineering work
