Gotten a verbal offer, but Google is asking for others numbers before disclosing one. Is this standard? Should I give them or just give a vague explanation? Haven’t negotiated before.
Yeah it’s normal, they want to save time in negotiations by proactively understanding the minimum amount they need to pay you. Also, the comp team is slow to approve the offer, so its win win.
Just tell them what you want to get, not what someone else has offered.
Ask them to disclose first. If your number is higher, share it.
Will they have a number already?
Yes but they can change the GSUs very easily. Never negotiate on base salary - there's only a narrow band they can give you - GSUs have enormous variability and they can dial up to match. Be long term greedy and don't get suckered by a signing bonus that shorts you next year and out.
This is Major bullshit
I also experienced similar with some other employer. They need to know other offers first. I find it weird, tell me your offer first then if I don't find it suitable we can discuss again.
Yea, they do that. Your other offers set the floor. Best (only?) negotiation tactic is to have strong competition. They don’t pay bad, but you’re not going to get crazy strong numbers without first putting in work.
By set the floor, do you mean they will go up from there? I’ve heard from others that they won’t go out of the way to match
My only worry is if my competing offer is below their original number or the median offer 😭
