tl;dr Google canceled a town hall meant to discuss the Google Diversity Manifesto due to safety concerns. Some Googlers leaked questions submitted in advance by other Googlers, along with personal information, to alt-right websites. http://mashable.com/2017/08/10/google-diversity-town-hall-canceled.amp What are your thoughts? Even if I didn't agree with someone in my company, I'd be ethically opposed to leaking their personal information. Especially in a way or in a venue that might subject them to harassment or compromise their safety. Just seems wrong.
Alt right... Lets just be clear, that was in reaction to the left blacklisting conservatives. Neither side is right in doing what they are doing, but in this instance both are to blame.
Also the original leaker of the doc was someone who disagreed with it, given that Gizmodo was one of the sites it got leaked to.
Posts about blacklisting anyone who disagrees with you doesn't cowtow to your demands would only survive in the tech echo chamber. The world needs to see these posts in the same way people expose super racist posts. Neither are okay, and until people see it and realize the intellectual rot that has made it's way into tech then it'll never change.
Aren't you forbidden using "blacklist"?
Welcome to reality google, looks like their little Silicon Valley bubble is being burst
Wasnt the initial diversity memo leaked too?
Yeah. I also have an ethical issue with that.
not everyone does
Leaking the questions and related personal information is really crossing a line for me. I'm really disappointed, but not surprised some people would do that.
Given the shitstorm, I can understand leaking the questions, though I disagree with it simply because Google has the right to draw the line of what is confidential and what isn't. Leaking / signal boost doxxing the names and personal info (especially sensitive things like pronouns), does most definitely cross any reasonable line though and shouldn't be tolerated.
if I was the CEO the last thing I want to do is to have a bunch of alt right protesting and then another bunch of SJW show up to counter them, get into a shouting match, riot police, tear gas, etc. See this is the exact shit show JD should have foreseen but created, great fucking job. It is now impossible to clean up and it is all on Google and now all Google's fault. Can you blame the corporate world for not wanting to hire PC incorrect dumbass now?
Revealing the names of people who submit questions online is, on the part of CEO, stupid or intended to chill dissent / reinforce the echo chamber.
Although there were definitely leaks to alt-right sites like Vox Day and Breitbart, there were still tons of leaks to left-leaning news too. The first leak that gained traction was to Motherboard, who painted it as if management was taking his side.
Sounds like they need to slightly anonymize the discussion and let questions be voted up. Does not seem super complicated.
And this is why Blind, while sucky, is so important.
That's what they do. You can choose to be anonymous if you want, and there is a voting system. Look up pictures of Google Moderator, it's basically the same system (this is public information based off a press release from 2008).
