Applying for a SWE/Embedded systems position. Just passed HC. Recruiter is asking what are my compensation expectations. In my mind, base above 140K should be enough. But I have 3 kids and don't want to struggle financially. Any ideas? 13 years of experience as an embedded software engineer. Bachelor in EE from a no-name University The position is in Mountain View. Will need to relocate
140k and 3 kids is gonna be tough around here! You'll have a loooong commute if you want a house for example
I found houses for rent on Trulia for 3-3.5k in Fremont and Milpitas. Are those places too far?
1h-1h30min each way
Amount of experience isn't relevant - the scope of responsibility of what you've worked on is. If your job history regularly included leading teams, look at compensation for a Senior SWE position on Glassdoor. If you usually write code by yourself or that others give you, look at comp for a SWE III.
...also, base is the least flexible, and RSU is the most - although usually you need a competing offer to actually negotiate at all.
Thanks. I did write and maintain a codebase the team used. But I've also heard Google will usually down-level you

Tell him competitive market rates with your experience and skill set. Googlers can tell you better, but you should get $160-$180 base and the other stuff.
