I was told that it was close but they decided not to make an offer. Try again next year. Do they say this to everyone who interviews on-site to not make them feel bad?
In case of a close call would an internal reference have made a difference?
I am pretty sure I got all the algorithms questions they asked right. So much so that in 2 cases we had time to spare so they asked another Algorithms question. One of the interviewers even told me that I did very well. There were surely a few slip ups that I can recall, but didn't know they would cost me this much.
Just getting the algorithms question right doesn't tell you much. Maybe you were slow, and they expected to be able to expand or add complexity to the question. Did you explicitly ask interviewers how you did? That always results in an awkward situation where interviewer can't really tell the interviewee they were mediocre. Not to say this was the case here.. Just saying it is often hard to judge how well you really did.
if you did not consistently write clean code ( wrote working for all) u still get rejected. coding inconsistency is a thing to them :)
Do you belong to an underrepresented minority?
My interview and result was exactly the same @CloseCall. Even down to interviewers saying I did well. I had an internal reference. However, I'm white and older and male. I don't think that's a good combo for "close." I think in my demographic, you better not be "close".
attitude also metters. i met a guy who is so aggressive that most of interviewer mention in feedback. although he did well with coding, he did not pass
I was told something like that as well. I had one pretty big fub near the end of the day where I got ahead of myself. I assumed that was it but obviously they don't tell you anything so you don't know. I did not have a referral.
I don't belong to an underrepresented minority. I agree with opw that attitude matters. I generally try to be positive. The feedback I got was that I didn't meet the coding, data structures algorithms bar. My feedback from phone interview was very positive. The recruiter even said - don't let that get to your head.
Sad to hear :( try fb. One tip that helps me is to be extra cautious and be ocd on the code and solution you give to the interviewer. Interviewers generally have a positive attitude that can throw the interviewee off track in believing they did well. Try and explain edge cases while u code if you plan to tackle them later. That way interviewer doesn't get a chance to interject and think u forgot something
Next time just tell them you identify as a female and it's 2x likely you'll be hired.
Does Google have a concept of "bar raiser" too? What happens if one of the five interviewers is not inclined?

no. they told a friend of mine right in the face that his code sucked and nobody gave him good feedback
Probably a bit more diplomatically.
