If you get low ball offer, is it worthy to join in? How difficult to get promoted and to catch up the compensation once you join in? I may take it at least to put google into my resume... +add a little bit more details: interview was target for L5 but I got downgraded to L4. Looks low ball based on other blind postings. Base pay cut to >10% but stock is better so comp w/o signing is similar. No other offer. But my Q is more about general advice though ++sorry for confusing you from “my resume” comment. That’s assuming the worst case. Actually I am pretty motivated on the new team, we’ll see. ;) I think I will take it anyway since money was not the reason to switch a job. But thru a long hiring process I might get some fantasy and high expectations on G/Tier1. Just disappointed today... wondering about G culture and career track (avg term for promo etc) though
How low? How many years of experience? What is your current level comparable to Google’s? What team (in general) are you joining? What is the level on the table? Finally, any competing offers?
How are you gonna ask this and not post the numbers 🤔
Sorry it’s already odd combination (my current company +downgrade +Low comp), I don’t want to disclose any more. Also I don’t believe actual number matters to discuss the general idea...
They do help. If you don't understand why, then that's pretty odd to me. If you didn't interview well why would you expect to get a good offer? If you don't tell us the offer there's no way for us to tell if it's actually a low-ball or not. Just because your current comp is higher doesn't mean this is necessarily a bad offer. It could mean you're currently overpaid relative to your individual market.
Generally, if you’re lowballed, it’ll take forever to catch up. Years minimum. Your coworkers who got higher offers will also be getting raises while you get raises so you’ll be forever playin catch up
Between a 110k Google vs 130k facebook maybe. Google vs some startup, no. Go to Google one year and jump ship. But that’s really for people with a year or two experience.
I don’t understand your comment. Would you mind clarifying? My comment was about catching up if you’re lowballed and stay at the same company for a long period of time. Sorry if that was unclear
The old advice is ‘If you get a seat on a rocket ship, don’t ask where is your seat is. Jump on!’ Except Google ain’t a rocket ship. 😏
Amazon is?
Amazon is a rocket ship headed for a blackhole
If you are truly l5 quality and talent, u manager will know it and work with you on fast track to l5 if you perform. Long term wise it’s not bad at google
Lol no. It had nothing to do with talent. It's all politics. And now with the new promo changes, it's all about numbers and luck. My coworker just got denied promo, not because he wasn't worthy, but because of "quota".
Will never make up the gap from a lowball offer.
You don't join Google, to get it on your resume.
You don’t?
Then what? If you join a shitty team with low-ball offer just for having it on resume it will not likely help. Any future recruiters/interviewers will ask the follow up question about what did you do at Google. Or better you’ll have to demonstrate your skill. I don’t believe just barely making it in Google and getting out in a year automatically gains you skills or any real value. For the purpose of initial call /opening the doors, any FAANG+MSFT will do it in 99% of cases.
Kill
I know people who balked at an IC role or not getting to be called Director even if it meant working at some crappy company. After a few years I think they would have been happier had they tried to come to google instead. Ymmv.
I've been happier at literally every other job I've had. Google is all bureaucracy and politics. The perks and money barely make up for it.
It is worthy to join considering you are in Intel. For a SWE there is no future in Intel. Also if you can crack Google interview you should be able to crack other interviews as well. How come you do not have competing offers ? Didn't you interview anywhere else ?
Don’t do it, you’ll hate the job
Say an Amazonian.
I agree. People will not respect you. It's all about rank at Google and the L5 and L6's will pull it on you all the time
