Google negotiation timing/strategy
Got an initial offer for SWE L4 at google. TC: 217k (~ 150/180 RSU/20 signon) (seems low according to blind, levels. fyi and friends at G) location: MTV When and how should i negotiate for more RSU or sign on? No competing offer yet but expect to get Facebook SWE E4 in Novemver (new headcount) (1) should I start negotiate before getting an offer from FB ? (2) when negotiating, is it better to ask for a number (ex ask for 280K RSU), or just ask for an increase and let them come back with a number? (3) during negotiation, how long do you wait between getting a number from the recruiter and email him/her to negotiate ? 1 day, 2 days, a week? Leveage without a competing offer: "wait for fb": no need to relocate. can start soon. lower cost of living. For Google, I'll have to relocate to the bay area YOE: 2 (PhD)
Google offers have a 1 year expiration date. So u can stall for months if u need to. Get that facebook offer and google will go to at least 250k. You should be able to ask for and get 150 base 300 stock 40 signon.
Delay your decision until the fb offer comes through. Use your google offer to expedite the fb offer and vice versa. And then the fun begins - start negotiating. There is always money on the table.
I told that I want to join but it's just not enough, so I will need to wait for other offers to use for increasing it, but I mentioned that I can't promise what will be my favorite after... Was able to get 150 rsu bump without competing offer.
