Google on-site SWE track: cloud or general?

Oct 19, 2018 14 Comments

Hi,
I passed my phone interview recently and have been asked by my Google sourcer about which track I want to go ahead with for SWE onsite. I am considering general and Cloud, but I am not able to decide. I have some cloud background and two published papers in the field. But I am not really like an expert. In terms of the interview and evaluation, is there any difference between those tracks? I am thinking maybe the cloud background will give me some advantage in evaluation phase, but as far as interviews go, is there any difference in the content/pattern? Also, is there any downside to google cloud swe track?

It is. Note same interview but I've seen ppl hired as l6 when they are really a l5. So lots of level inflation

You interview for Google, not a particular team. When you go to a PA for on-sites, you are essentially giving them the first chance to speak with you if your onsites go well. Your interview process won't be different and you'll probably be interviewed by engineers in several different PAs anyhow.

My sourcer told me to first choose a track, so that she can forward me to the appropriate recruiter, who will schedule my on-site.
