Don't know about others, but I really appreciate the way Sundar takes decisions. In his latest interview, he quoted Google is going to "Test" WFH, and see how it impacts performance & professional relationships among teammates.

Instead of blindly stating to have WFH on a permanent basis (what Twitter did!), Google is approaching this problem in a more radical way.

I would recommend a limit to WFH, maybe at max 3 days a week. This would give employees flexibility and still keep professional relationships strong.

    • Use a credit system. An employee must use atleast say 150 days of wfh. Plan the calendar atleast a month in advance. Ppl have paid thousands for agile coach and what not. Have them figure out the scheduling - do some real work.

I don’t mind living in east bay in a cheaper place and driving for 1 - 1.5 hour one way if I’m doing that twice a week.

For what it's worth, the current data wouldn't be very representative of remote work, it's more of a work under pandemic with constant negative news streams.

Nothing radical about it. He is simply hedging his bets and going the data driven way.

Pichai knows that it's a low upside/high downside decision. There is no real big disruptive gain for Google if they take a leap of faith and announce permanent WFH. Unlike some other companies, they don't need to offer remote work to attract talent. With their profile and having offices all over the world, they are still going to attract talent from all over, regardless of what they do.

But there is a lot to lose for them if they announce WFH and it lowers productivity in the long term. Pulling back on the decision later is very bad PR and is potentially disruptive to employees who got used to permanent WFH and moved somewhere else.

    • Vast majority per FB poll don't want to permanent WFH. They want it as an option, but the only reason they do is they haven't experienced what that's like. Once things go back to normal, the opinions will shift.
