Google recruiter wants me to interview for L3

Sep 29, 2018 48 Comments

I have 4 years of experience as software engineer at top hedge funds. I have designed and built backend micro services from scratch. I can do 90% of the tasks without someone telling me how to do it. I feel I am capable of performing as L4 but recruiter is saying that I can succeed better at Google if I start as L3. I don’t believe that. TC: 250-300K. Base 175K and rest is bonus. Should I refuse to interview for L3?

Honestly, you should go somewhere else or demand an L4 interview. You won't be happy at google at L3 and the recruiter is going to lie to you and tell you that you can just get promoted in a year.

    They won't match 300TC for L3

Yep! You will be well above band, but they can hit 300k. 145/415/100 earlier this year.

No way, my recruiter told me 300k is impossible

You could kiss that base salary good bye. You wouldn’t get more than 140 base, 250 tc. Don’t do it. Tell her no and that you’re going to interview with Facebook

I am not worried about base as long as TC is equivalent to my current TC. But i will say no for L3

I'm opposite, I'd rather get high TC and low level as opposed to lower TC higher level

As a Google staffing manager, I'm assuming the recruiter is just trying to set you up for interview success, but clearly it wouldn't be in line with comp expectations. Just tell them you want to interview for L4, but also understand the expectations will be much higher in the process. Good luck!

I would also do some research on the difference between L3 and L4 SWE's. This will help you to prep and hopefully convince the recruiter as well.

Dude don’t interview for L3. It’s really not worth it, they won’t match your expectations. Tell them you’re okay with interviewing for L4 and being downleveled from interview (if this happens reject the offer lol) rather than straight up interviewing for L3. There’s no upleveling.

Tell her the interview target is L4 or you won't do the interview. Worst case they give you an L3 offer if you performed decently well.

Yes that’s what i am thinking but for that she should also agree to setup L4 loop

Do they talk about getting fired everyday? Do they constantly check and reply to their email except sleeping hours?

I'm surprised the recruiter even told you what level you're being interviewed for. Usually recruiters keep this to themselves even when giving out offers. I know several recruiters who straight up lie and tell candidates they cannot reveal the level for their offer.

Googler gets pissed when they find out they were underleveled after joining. So be upfront about expectations with your recruiter.

Can confirm - was told they didn’t know my level and that I’d have to ask the director of my dept who was incredibly hard to get ahold of. I accepted and was (surprise surprise) underleveled. Manager is pushing hard for <1yr promo, but the whole thing left a bad taste

Most external L4 hires I've seen have at least 5 years of experience, you're in the middle -- I'd probably wait a year before considering a move to a large company

That sucks. Do you really need 5 yoe to perform at L4 level? The guy who went to school with me joined google fresh out of school and just got promoted to L5 last month.
      Sep 29, 2018
    • It's easier to get promoted internally than it is to be hired at any given level. If your friend is an L5 now, he'd probably come in as an L4 and be downleveled if he was interviewing at Google.

It doesn’t hurt interviewing. Do best in your interviews and then start negotiating with other offers in hand.

Level is not negotiable if they interview you as L3. You won’t get the design interviews needed for L4-5 consideration. It’d be a waste
