Hi. Is there any Googler here willing to give me a referral? I’ve been talking with a recruiter and just want a referral to secure my phone screen (not sure if a referral increases my chances too). I’d really appreciate if you can give me some interview tips too. Briefly about myself, 2 YOE as Java developer with experience in building web services and app performance tuning/testing. Aspire to be a SWE at Google. I can share my LinkedIn profile and elaborate more if you pm me. Thanks!
Why someone will provide you with a referral? You might be the shittiest developer in the world and if I provide my referrals to 10 person like you then eventually it might hurt me.
Google takes referrals seriously in a kind of dumb way...
At this point, anybody could refer you and just get a referral fee. You are already talking to a recruiter, why bother?
Referral will only be useful if it is from a person who can vouch for you. I have referred hundreds of unknown people, many of them didn't even get a phone screen. Just generic emails.
I already talked to a recruiter and she wanted to schedule a phone screen. She did ask if I knew anyone at Google so I just wanted to get a referral since I thought it would increase my chances. But looks like it doesn’t unless I worked with the reference. Thanks for info!
Yes. That one is useful only if you are a border case at HC and the referrer can swing it in your favor. I knew no one at Google during my time and it didn't matter.
As you are in touch with recruiter and looking forward for next steps, It doesn’t matter if you have reference or not. You should be good with that. I didn’t have any reference and scheduled onsite in a month.
Ah I see. Thanks!
Referrals do matter later in the process too since the hiring committee looks at them as well while making a decision and can make your case stronger. You need someone you know or at least have met though.
