Google strategy and ops L5/ L6 salary info (2019)

Apr 20, 2019 26 Comments

Considering strategy and ops roles within a BU at G and wondering what are typical offers for L5 and L6 levels.

Also what’s the typical sign on? Recruiter says no sign on but I realize a competing offer could prove leverage

Background : 6-8 yrs in industry and ~2.5 years in MBB consulting. Is expecting a L6 a stretch?

Won't be surprised either. Humble yourself a bit and expect to be humbled further by the HC.

  • OP, get an offer from Facebook and then you will have leverage. Also be willing to walk away. That’s the only way

YMMV, but I came from MBB as an L5 and took a pay cut. I was able to negotiate a small sign-on bonus and increase in base (~5%). If you’re on track for promotion at MBB and primarily interested in maximizing TC, then you should probably stay...

Got it. What level did you leave McK at? do you mind sharing comp breakdown for L5? Base, RSU, bonus (15%?)

Now that you are on the inside, are you able to comment if G increases your pay during performance reviews if you get in at lower end of band?

Similar background to you (OP), in terms of YOE consulting + industry.

In my experience, comp breakdown for a given level—even within the same position—is much more varied than MBB. For example, bonus, inc. commission, is generally higher as % of TC in sales, but there’s considerable variation. Overall, levels are much “wider” in tenure, comp, etc., since they aren’t up-or-out (typically).

Pay increases are (by definition) more likely if you start at the bottom of the band. Of course, they’d have to be justified by strong performance.

I’d recommend reaching out to your recruiter directly to understand comp breakdown—it’s a totally fair question to ask while negotiating!
