Google technical solutions engineer

What is that role like? is it more like customer support? is it heavy on coding? how is the compensation compared to SWEs assuming same level?

Succinct answer: Pre-sales, no and lower

It's crap. They offer TSE to people who fail SWE interviews but still have enough soft skills to contribute something. It's on the O ladder, not T ladder which means is hard to change to SWE despite what your recruiter will tell you about how easily you can move internally. They might get used in presales areas but I haven't seen it. You might do coding all day just like a swe but get paid much less. Promo is handled differently. On T ladder you put yourself up for promo. On O ladder your manager recommends you. You may consider that a plus or a minus or simply different. Also when someone calls for a reference check Google will tell them you were a technical solutions consultant. Engineer isn't really in your title.

What is the daily work like? Handling tickets? Automation? Building systems?

Could be a variety of things including lots of coding. Maybe supporting some product.
