Currently at Google and got offers from Tesla and Airbnb. I'm in HW. Biggest motivation to change jobs right now is commute to google can be 2+ hours each way whereas Airbnb and Tesla are 45 min and 80 min respectively. Current TC: 266.5k 6.5 YOE + Masters (Base/RSU over 4yr/Annual Bonus/Sign On) Airbnb: 277.25k TC 165k/350k/24.75k (15%)/20k L4 (mid-level engineer) Tesla: 260k TC 155k/420k/0/0 P4 (staff engineer) Not sure what Airbnb's or Tesla's equity refresher are. I'm hearing about 20-25% of initial grant but no confirmed numbers. I know Tesla also offers ESPP so I don't know if this helps at all with the lack of annual bonus. The numbers are all really close so I'm trying to look at everything as a total package in terms of work life balance, career growth, compensation, and benefits. Airbnb seems like the better choice comp wise, but I am not sure about stability or career development there. I also feel a little upset Airbnb won't consider me for L5 (senior engineer) given Tesla leveled me at Staff but it's my fault for not being explicit about it earlier.
I would say the upside on Tesla would be much better but I am not sure your work life balance will be better. Sure you will be commuting less but from people I know there they have periods of insane hours
Don't expect more stock growth for a year or so at Tesla.
Are the Airbnb bonus numbers confirmed? Last I heard they hadn't decided on whether to continue the bonus program past March 2020.
Recruiter said it just got renewed for this year and that it is up for review every year but should get approved. Right now, he has been talking as if it is part of the package and states that comp would be adjusted if it was not renewed next year. Of course, this is just his word so I don't know how to get better confirmation.
Maybe off topic, but of these 3 companies, perks provided by Google will outweigh any salary differences right? How do you like work at google? Mind sharing what kind of work your team does?
Perks aren't substantial enough to outweigh salary differences. Mostly free food which a lot of companies have nowadays and facilities I never use because I'm always rushing home due to the commute. Work at Google has been good but project cancellations and reorgs are pretty common so it's been hard to get on track for promo (another frustration I have). Hardware roles at Google mostly involve R&D type things or work on their consumer hardware line (Pixel, Nest, Chromecast, etc).
If I were you, I would rent somewhere closer to Google......
I own a house (from before I started at Google) so we would have to sell or rent it, and my spouse who does not work in tech would have to look for a new job in South Bay. Definitely an option that's been considered, but many barriers and unknowns there. Not sure if it's worth hassle if I think there's an equal or better opportunity closer.
That makes sense. In that case, I would recommend Airbnb. Given the Tesla culture, your level and the 80 min commute, I don't think you will be home a longer time than what you have now. But that said, Tesla is probably the most esteemed in hardware world among these 3.
When you say Hardware is it Mechanical or Electrical?
I would also like to know
Mechanical
I'd suggest that you to move closer to Google, given the confidence in Google is way higher than in the other 2.
420k in RSU.🔥🔥. Damn, 420 seems to be Elon's fav number.
What kinda hardware work do you do at Google?
This is a pretty good offer for a hardware engineer... congratulations... my vote is for Tesla... Airbnb and hardware... may not coexist
