Google v Uber offer eval

Hey everyone, need a bit of input in deciding between G and Uber. Here are the offer details: G: L3 140k base + 15% target bonus 25k signing 240k equity over 4 years Location NYC Uber: L4 145 base + 15k target bonus 25k signing 270k equity over 4 years Location SF YoE: 3yrs Also located in NYC currently, so I'm also considering the overhead of moving. Teams for both are equally interesting (but Ubers IPO-ing 😐) Thanks in advance for the advice!

Google. It’s real money. Uber will lose at least 30% after ipo and it’s not clear if they ever recover

I'd do G, mostly because NYC

Uber grc4j Mar 30, 2019

You can choose a NYC team at Uber too

Google ovBk62 Mar 30, 2019

Go for Google. You don't need to move. And Uber stock will probably take a hit after IPO. Google's will grow a bit at least.

Geeze these companies really pay that much? Is this median at these levels? Always find it hard to believe the numbers I see on this app.

Uber GxRT17 Mar 30, 2019

Yes, they do. Their Google offer is probably super top of band for L3 tho, and Uber offer is about average for L4

WOW interesting...Time to have Leetcode for breakfast. Congrats OP! Tough decision...Uber is very tempting because of potential growth opportunities...

Given the possible upcoming recession it’s not clear whether Google or Uber’s stock will do better. Uber is supposedly “recession proof” because more people will be drivers in a recession, and drivers are the bottleneck, but who knows what’ll happen. Also while NYC is cool and all, there’s no comparison with Bay Area opportunity and comp for engineers. You’ll also be closer to the HQs so promotions and visibility will be easier.

Agree with this, empirically I have gotten lower offers from NYC FANG.. the reason they gave is there is less competition there

Agree that there will be more drivers, but will it be less riders by then?

Can’t go wrong either way - I think you’ll end up picking Google cuz similar TC and NYC, but Uber is a higher level and probably better longer term due to that

Uber eats in nyc? If so I would go Google since I’ve heard Uber eats tech is behind the rest of Uber

270K uber equity at what valuation? If it is $120B I think that is inflated. Looks like Google’s offer is slightly stronger. Maybe you can push Google a bit more because Uber gave you L4.

Uber 2muchblind Mar 30, 2019

This is almost certainly at the $50/share valuation. A $120B valuation would almost double that, I think.

Uber nickki Mar 30, 2019

Never go for the upper band of the previous level if you have other options.

Is the signing bonus cash?

Yes, it's cash
