I'm currently a Google intern (PhD, research org) and have one more summer for an internship. Would it be better to try out a different company (thinking of FB or Microsoft) for better salary negotiation later on, or do another internship at Google? (more chances to get in as FTE?) I've heard that FB and Microsoft have very good internship programs (+research org) and would also just like the experience at a different company. But then on the other hand, I hear that it's hard to get Google FTE offers so maybe it would be better to increase my chances with another internship. Not sure how different it would be... Also, I'm currently not eligible for conversion. Does anyone know if you can take conversion interviews for the current internship next year? (When I might be eligiblle) #internship
why would you go back to google and risk a conversion interview to get a no offer? I would go to FB do well and get an offer and then interview at g as a back up.
This. Or G in the summer and fb in the autumn before u graduate.
This is what I thought initially, but I heard that if you have positive feedbacks from two G internships you might not have to go through the interviews so was wondering what people would suggest.
It’s like Pokémon, you hardly ever need two of the same kind, and your goal is to catch’em all.
Haha nice metaphor
Explore vs exploit... id stick to g
I’ve managed interns at FB. It’s a great experience for everyone, TBH. If you don’t suck at your FB internship you get an FTE offer. Fair warning though, WLB sucks at FB.
Have you thought about Microsoft Research?
Yeah, they are really strong in my field. How are internships at MSR?
You can safely remove MSR from your consideration
Why? I was thinking of it as an option
How to get an internship at google?
Are you aiming for RS or SWE roles? If RS, is your h-index (flawed metric) above 10?
Nope..most of my papers are from this year or the last so hope it goes up in 2yrs. I would prefer an RS role if possible but SWE is also fine (but not so confident with my Leetcode skills tho - not a CS major)
Google has a soft rule of h-index 10 for RS. You can probably land a role as a SWE working with RS (and still publish papers). If I were you, I'd stay at google and try to get a conversion offer. Google research is still king. Honestly the research culture is the same whether you're at Microsoft, Google, or Facebook. It's not as variable as SWE. Research teams routinely interact with other companies' research teams, so the culture converges.
