Google vs Spotify

How do they compare on things like wlb, culture, backstabbing, etc.
I know it's highly team dependent, but overall trend?

Boston office seems to have the best team culture out of the different Spotify engineering hubs.

If you don't care at all about what work you are doing and are willing spend years of your life changing in-app text formatting (and other such lame things) so you can pretend to be cool, yeah you'll do just fine at Spotify. Otherwise, don't be fooled by the "cult"-ure they project outside.

Also, if you have a baby on the way, definitely go for Spotify and start searching for new jobs one month before your paternity leave concludes.

Scarymoose your level is the biggest determinate of which one to pick, if google is leveling you really high go there, at the lower levels you are very much a cog. Spotify is better for a better WLB and more ability to shape your career. Money wise it really depends on how to see the two stocks appreciating.

Hmm in that case the move to L3 might not be too horrible. L3s are definitely grunt-y at Google though, the company is just too big and has too many engineers and people seem to really respect levels. On the other hand, you will get the Google recognition when you leave. Don’t expect to be promoted quickly though, you are eligible for promo your first cycle and probably won’t have had enough promotable work by second cycle. The average L4 promo takes 2 years, promos are very competitive and Google doesn’t give refreshers year one anymore. There’s also the possibility of the team you’re on getting reorged to a different location and then you’ll have only 3 months to find a new team and your performance on the old team doesn’t count. On the other hand at Spotify you’ll get options so you’re banking on SPOT growth. Overall your mileage will very, what’s your offer from Google? I’ve heard that the offers have gone down so that may remove the biggest plus for Google.
