Will be receiving offers from Google (not Waymo) and Uber ATG. Also, expected promotion at Apple in 6 months (ICT3 -> ICT4). Of course money is important and I haven’t seen any numbers yet but I’d assume G and U will be comparable and Apple will maybe maybe come close to it (in 6 months). I love Apple (big fan) and enjoy my team and the work I do. Excellent work/life balance, good manager, good team but shit pay (lowballed me and now I’m stuck) Google is fun, lots of good benefits, stable and pay well. The team I’d be joining is working on a cool project that (if not canceled) will have major impact. Uber ATG seems very fun and energetic. It’s still a startup, but most likely they will go public and succeed. And the team I interviewed for was awesome!! Don’t know what to do: A) stay at Apple, try to get a raise. B) go to G, make good money and enjoy free food and all the other benefits C) risk it and go to Uber and work on ground breaking technology I’m married with 2 kids. What should I do is total compensation is comparable.
Sounds like you don’t have offers yet. You also didn’t mention how long you’ve been at Apple but it sounds like other than pay you’re pretty happy. Not to mention you’re getting promoted. First things first, decide if you’re ok with leaving Apple right now. If not (i.e. you’re too comfortable) then the rest of this doesn’t matter. Next, if you don’t mind the idea of leaving, collect your other offers. Then sit down with your manager. Explain what you said above and mention you interviewed before getting promoted. It’s not entirely a money thing but you’d be foolish not to take money seriously. Ask them to match total comp in some way. With offers in hand this is low risk. Either way it’ll work out. Good luck.
You’re right. I don’t have offer in hand (yet) but both recruiters have told me they’ll be back with numbers. I’ve been at Apple for 3 years now. And yes, I love it! And yes, I can go into my managers office and tell her about my two offers and ask for a better pay. But is that really a good idea?? I’ve never heard anything good come out of that!! Even if I twist their hand to give me promotion, I have lost my value in my opinion. Also, what if she says “we can match it but not now, I’m 6 months or a year”. Do I take her word and decline G and/or U? What if she gets fired next month or something happens between now and her “promised” date. That’s why I don’t think taking those offers to her and asking for more money is a good idea..... and that is unfortunate!!!
If they actually want to try and stop the loss, they’ll be able to act right away. If they say you have to wait, what they’re really saying is, “Go - it’s cool”.
I believe Google is the right choice for you. FWIW I don’t think one should believe the words that you will get “ICT4 promotion in half year/one year” or anything like that. I was told the same thing every year since 2014, and nothing has ever happened. (Probably this is related to a manager who loves playing all kinds of political games, and a coworker from my home country who return kindness with ingratitude, but anyway, ) you are not a fresh grad now and need to understand you should never take that sort of “promise” seriously. Hope this helps.
I agree. The current comp period is already over. So whatever she promises me will mean nothing. I have a friend in IMG who switched teams with a promise from his new team that he will be promoted to ict4. 2 years later and still nothing.
Never take a"promise". Like you imagined, counter offers are usually tricky. If you like what you do (which you seem to), then stay. If you want that higher pay, go to Google. If you want higher risk higher return (keep in mind your kids, how old they are, etc) then go to Uber. The good thing is, you seem to be in control and you can't lose! Lucky you!
It might be good to try things every once in a while, but don’t forget the grass is always greener. If you are happy at apple and the pay is comparable, and you feel like you are growing your career, why leave?
I’m very happy at Apple but the pay is not comparable and that’s the problem.
Given the fact that you are married with 2 kids, high-risk companies like Uber sounds like a worse idea than others. On the other hand, you probably don't like what you are working on in one way or another if you have been putting effort into interviewing. So, given your choices I would guess Google.
Yeah we don’t have any parents at Uber good stream of logic there
I love what I do at Apple. It’s the pay I’m not happy with. The problem is once you get lowballed, it’s hard to break out of it.
You’ve already been in a big mature company at Apple. No point doing the same at Google. Try something different. Uber ATG is a smaller startup style company. You might enjoy the change in culture.
+1
Uber has become a lot more parent friendly in the past year FWIW.
In terms of excitement I would go with Uber. Google will always be there, you could go there later. I have worked at Google before and I like Uber quite a bit more. There's more excitement, more of a mission, talented people, chances for much more impact, and with ATG you will be working on hot tech. It's also quite easy to change teams within Uber, much more than Google. Google is a good company as well and has talented people, but has too many products with no clear mission. Since it's a huge company, it's not easy to make much of an impact. You will feel like a small, small, employee in a huge ecosystem where you personally are not adding much value. In terms of finance, I would want Uber to give 20+% more RSUs than Google (and they should be able to) to be considered an equal offer. The extra is needed since you wouldn't be able to sell until IPO. Google will try pressure tactics on you to make you accept their offer by giving you tight time limits, but don't budge and let Uber also give you an offer in response. Uber is not as much a risk as you think it is. It's a pretty big startup with lots of revenues. If you were joining a small startup there would have been real risk, but with Uber risk is quite low.
Got all my numbers. From TC perspective, G > U > A Base: G > (A == U) RSU: G >> (U ~ A) I was surprised at Uber’s package. I was expecting them to produce a better package given that their RSUs are promise notes at this point. Yes they have huge potential but still... I haven’t decided yet, but most likely will go with G. I’ll reveal final numbers after negotiations. Thanks everyone for your input.
Google is probably offering you more since Uber and Apple are competitors. But I believe Uber should be able to match and/or exceed Google offer.
Nope. Uber is not willing (as of yet) to improve numbers even after I told them about Gs offer! Their response has been “we are highly undervalued so the stocks you are getting are worth much more”.
Can you post your final numbers?
No point staying at Apple; you seem to have a good project in Google that will pay much better than Apple. Uber ATG is good too but more uncertain than Google. Of late, I have heard a couple of cases where initial RSUs at Uber has been very high. If they go public with same valuation, you will be better off at Uber though the risk is always there. I think your Google offer will be better than Apple based on what I have seen so far (plus not sure how confident you are about your promotion to ICT4 in Apple). Congrats on your offer/s; not many people have this kind of a luxury to choose from!!
Thanks for your advice! Appreciate it
I would have said no point going ATG, so I guess it leaves Google...
